Remote Optical Transport Engineer information

What is the difference between Remote Optical Transport Engineer vs Network Operations Center (NOC) Technician?

AspectRemote Optical Transport EngineerNetwork Operations Center (NOC) Technician
Required CertificationsOptical certifications (e.g., CWNP, Cisco CCNA)Network certifications (e.g., CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA)
Work EnvironmentField and remote technical support for optical networksMonitoring and troubleshooting network systems in a control room
Industry UsageTelecommunications, fiber optic service providersInternet service providers, telecom companies
Job FocusMaintaining and optimizing optical transport equipmentMonitoring network performance and resolving outages

The Remote Optical Transport Engineer and NOC Technician roles share some certifications and industry environments but differ mainly in focus. The engineer specializes in optical network hardware and remote support, while the NOC technician concentrates on network monitoring and troubleshooting in a control room setting.

What is a Remote Optical Transport Engineer?

A Remote Optical Transport Engineer is a telecommunications professional who designs, implements, monitors, and troubleshoots optical fiber networks from a remote location. These engineers are responsible for ensuring the reliable transmission of data over long distances using fiber optic technologies like DWDM, SONET, or OTN. They often work with network management systems, perform remote diagnostics, and collaborate with on-site technicians to optimize network performance. This role is essential for companies that rely on high-speed communications infrastructure, such as ISPs, data centers, and large enterprises.

How does a Remote Optical Transport Engineer typically collaborate with on-site teams to resolve network issues?

As a Remote Optical Transport Engineer, you will frequently work closely with on-site technicians and network operations center (NOC) staff to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to optical transmission equipment and fiber links. Communication is often managed through video calls, ticketing systems, and detailed documentation, requiring clear instructions and remote diagnostic skills. You'll analyze network alarms, interpret performance data, and guide on-site teams through hands-on tasks, making strong collaboration and communication abilities essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Optical Transport Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Optical Transport Engineer, you need a solid background in optical networking, fiber optic communication, and network design, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with DWDM, SONET/SDH, OTN, network management systems, and industry certifications like Cisco or Juniper is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills are crucial for collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex issues. These competencies ensure reliable, high-performance optical networks and efficient resolution of connectivity challenges in remote operating environments.

About the role and teamย

The Uber Platform Engineering organization builds and manages the compute, storage and network infrastructure that supports Uber's workloads globally. Within Platform Engineering, the Global Network Infrastructure team is looking for an optical network transport engineer who will help deliver our next-generation network solutions that increase the efficiency, reliability, performance and agility of Uber's global platform.

The team is looking for someone with a passion for building optical networking solutions that extend across different networking environments (on-prem data centers, peering points, backbone, cloud providers) and working on the most demanding, critical elements of a network supporting the needs of people across the globe. If you work comfortably in a collaborative, agile environment, and are excited to learn, we'd like to talk to you.

At Uber, we ignite opportunity by setting the world in motion. We take on big problems to help drivers, riders, delivery partners, and Eaters get moving in more than 600 cities around the world. We welcome people from all backgrounds who seek the opportunity to help build a future where everyone and everything can move independently. If you have a curiosity, passion and collaborative spirit, work with us, and let's move the world forward together.

What you'll doย

  • Design, build, and maintain optical systems that directly support Uber's core business of rides and eats that move in the real world-where performance, safety, and scale cannot be separated.
  • Work through technical debt and shifting priorities to drive efficiency across all lifecycle areas, from initial design and deployment to iteration and operational support.
  • Lead efforts to build software-based calibration tools, automation scripts, and validation pipelines as we move toward production-ready, automated solutions.
  • Own your work end-to-end, from defining SOPs and quality gates to participating in on-call rotations and troubleshooting production incidents when stakes are high.
  • Collaborate across disciplines-perception, systems, and platform teams-to ensure our infrastructure and calibration strategies scale with global fleet growth.

Basic Qualificationsย

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with major OTN devices, such as Infinera/Nokia, Ciena, or ADVA/Adtran.
  • Knowledge of optical transport, system design, device delivery and operations including troubleshooting and incident management.
  • Participate in on-call schedules and serve as escalation points for service-related issues.
  • Experience with working in a lights-out environment or interfacing with remote hands, vendors and a globally distributed team.

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Expertise in provisioning of network device configurations for major OTN vendors and hardware.
  • Solid experience in TCP, IPv4/6, and dynamic routing protocols such as BGP and IS-IS.
  • Experience supporting large-scale green or brownfield architecture, designs, and deployments for global or national enterprise or Service Providers in backbone or data center network fabrics.
  • Proven ability to lead operational excellence through best-practice change management, outage mitigation and blameless post-mortem processes.
  • You have great interpersonal skills, deep technical ability, and a portfolio of successful execution. You are open-minded to discuss various technical approaches and able to drive consensus across various stakeholders at Uber.
  • A relentless desire to build each network better than the last. Treat networking, operational efficiency, and automation as sciences with room for artful breakthroughs.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages such as Go or Python.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based environments (e.g. bash/zsh)
