Remote Optical Network Engineer information

What is a remote optical network engineer?

A Remote Optical Network Engineer is a professional who designs, installs, maintains, and troubleshoots optical fiber networks from a remote location. They work with technologies such as DWDM, CWDM, and other fiber optic equipment to ensure high-speed data transmission over long distances. These engineers may remotely monitor network performance, configure devices, and provide technical support to onsite teams or clients. Their role is crucial in telecommunications, internet service provision, and enterprises that rely on robust fiber optic infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote optical network engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Optical Network Engineer, you need a solid background in optical networking principles, fiber optic technology, and network troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like OTDRs, DWDM systems, network management software, and certifications such as Cisco CCNP or Juniper JNCIP are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart. These competencies ensure reliable network performance and efficient remote resolution of complex optical issues.

What are some common challenges faced by remote optical network engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote Optical Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex network issues without on-site access, coordinating with geographically dispersed teams, and managing network upgrades or maintenance during off-peak hours. Effective communication with local field technicians and utilizing advanced remote monitoring tools are essential for resolving issues efficiently. Staying up-to-date with the latest optical technologies and maintaining detailed documentation further help in navigating these challenges, ensuring network reliability and performance.

As an AVP DevOps Engineer, you will design, build, and support cloud infrastructure, automation platforms, and developer tooling that improve reliability, scalability, security, and developer experience. You will partner with application teams, platform engineers, cloud security, and SRE teams to deliver modern cloud-native solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and support cloud infrastructure across AWS and Azure.

  • Build and maintain Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform and Terraform Cloud.

  • Develop and operate CI/CD platforms and deployment automation, preferably GitLab CI/CD.

  • Support compute platforms including VMs, containers, Kubernetes, managed container services, and serverless services.

  • Build and enhance developer tooling, self-service capabilities, Dev Containers, Remote IDE solutions, and standardized development environments.

  • Manage AI coding assistants, including Claude, and context management platforms such as MCP services for code and documentation workflows.

  • Design and support cloud networking services including DNS, certificates, load balancing, CDN integration, routing, private connectivity, and hybrid networking.

  • Improve platform reliability, observability, security, and operational efficiency through automation.

  • Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Collaborate with engineering, security, and operations teams to deliver scalable platform capabilities.

  • Participate in the team's on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years in DevOps, Platform Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, SRE, or similar engineering roles.

  • Strong programming skills in Python or C#, with an emphasis on maintainable, production-quality automation and services.

  • Deep hands-on experience with Terraform, Terraform Cloud, reusable modules, state management, and IaC lifecycle operations.

  • Experience operating AWS and/or Azure production environments.

  • Experience designing and operating CI/CD and deployment automation platforms, preferably GitLab CI/CD.

  • Strong understanding of containers, container orchestration, Kubernetes, managed container services, and serverless architectures.

  • Experience with Dev Containers, Remote IDEs, standardized development environments, and self-service developer platforms.

  • Strong understanding of DNS, TLS/SSL certificates, load balancing, CDNs, cloud networking, routing, private connectivity, and network troubleshooting.

  • Experience with observability, monitoring, incident response, production support, and distributed system troubleshooting.

  • Strong communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills; proficiency with Jira or similar delivery tracking tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Internal Developer Platforms such as Cortex, Backstage, or OpsLevel.

  • Experience automating end-to-end developer workflows from local development through deployment and runtime operations.

  • Familiarity with SRE practices including SLIs, SLOs, and post-incident reviews.

  • Experience in regulated or security-conscious environments.

  • Exposure to FinOps and cloud cost optimization practices.

  • Experience with TypeScript.

You bring strong ownership, practical problem-solving, and a passion for automation and developer productivity. You balance reliability, scalability, security, and usability while communicating clearly and operating effectively in a fast-paced, highly technical environment.
