JOB SUMMARY
The Fire Systems Designer works for the ORR Protection team to layout and design fire suppression and fire alarm systems for installation at customer sites. Designers convert input data into installation drawings in using CAD software, and to as-built drawings after installation. Designers are also responsible for production of submittal packages for the permitting and installation of the system. Designers are responsible for ensuring the design meets the applicable manufacturerโ€™s requirements, NFPA Standards, and local code requirements. Designers also help our field staff in obtaining technical information to assist them while they are in the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Uses computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering and design tasks.
  • Evaluates system designs to ensure they meet appropriate requirements. This may include customer specifications, building codes, NFPA codes and standards, manufacturer manuals and bulletins, insurance carrier requirements or others dependent upon applications.
  • Prepares installation drawings that conform to input requirements. Suggests changes to the contracted scope for improvements in reliability, price reduction, or missing scope.
  • Support sales effort through performing applications analysis and pre-sales design work.
  • Supports the region the Designer works in by performing tasks requested.
  • Communicates via email and other electronic means regarding project information internally and outside the company.
  • Organizes workload and tasks autonomously. Communicates the status of each task to supervisor/manager and internal customers on a regular and on-going basis.
  • Tracks work tasks using the company provided systems.
  • Organizes technical information for storage and retrieval by self and others.
  • Performs self-review of completed designs as part of the quality control process. Revises designs from feedback when received from the quality control reviewer of each project.
  • Attend required training courses related to job functions and for professional development including travel to the classes.
  • Research applications for fire systems and products. Become familiar with new applications/products through active learning.
  • Perform field surveys to develop new designs, modify existing systems, or assist installation personnel in complex projects.
  • Interpret multiple types of trade drawings to coordinate between other trades.
  • Participate in the development of drawing standards and templates for new fire protection products.
  • Participate in engineering quality control activities.
  • Consistently exhibit company values including: integrity, cooperation, accountability and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • BS in engineering technology, electronics, or equivalent experience in related industry, preferred.
  • 3 yearsโ€™ experience in the fire protection industry, required.
  • 1-year experience in CAD, required.
  • Prior NICET certifications (any level, any discipline) are preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • This position will report to the corporate office in Louisville, KY but remote applicants will be accepted providing they have a suitable place to work from home.
  • Overnight travel will be required up to 15% of the time for field visits.
