What is a remote open source developer?

A Remote Open Source Developer is a software engineer who contributes to open source projects while working from a location outside of a traditional office. These developers collaborate with distributed teams, often using online platforms like GitHub or GitLab to share code and track issues. Their work involves writing, testing, and documenting code, as well as reviewing contributions from others. Remote Open Source Developers may be volunteers or paid contributors, and they typically engage with a global community to improve and maintain open source software.

How does a remote open source developer typically collaborate with distributed teams and community contributors?

As a remote open source developer, collaboration often takes place through online platforms such as GitHub, GitLab, and community forums. You will regularly participate in code reviews, contribute to discussions on issue trackers, and join virtual meetings or chat channels with both core team members and external contributors. Strong written communication skills are essential, as most interactions are asynchronous and require clear documentation. You'll also need to be proactive in seeking feedback and providing updates, ensuring smooth progress on projects across different time zones.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote open source developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Open Source Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++), familiarity with open source workflows, and a solid understanding of version control systems like Git. Experience with collaborative platforms such as GitHub or GitLab, and familiarity with continuous integration (CI) tools, are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously help you stand out in distributed teams. These skills and qualities are essential to effectively contribute code, engage with global communities, and maintain productivity in a remote, open-source environment.

Job description

About Sentient The Sentient Foundation is building the open-source future of intelligence: AI aligned with humanity and never controlled by a single entity. We’re a neutral, transparent steward of the open AGI ecosystem, uniting researchers, builders, and communities through open research (ROMA, OML, Open Deep Search), global programs like the Open AGI Summit, and a fast-growing builder community.

About the Role

We're hiring a Head of Product for the Foundation to turn our research into shipped, public-facing products: agent evaluation platforms, benchmarks, leaderboards, datasets, developer tools, and community launches. You'll take ambiguous ideas from concept to launch, with clear users, metrics, documentation, and iteration loops, You will work across research, engineering, design, marketing, BD, and community. You’ll own the Foundation’s product function and roadmap, step in to lead the existing Agents & Evaluation (Eval AI) product effort.

This is a senior, 0-to-1 leadership role in a category where best practices don’t exist yet. You’ll define them, and build and lead the team that delivers them.

What You'll Do
  • Own 0-to-1 launches end to end: translate research agendas into product specs, user journeys, success metrics, and launch plans.

  • Own the Foundation’s product function: strategy, roadmap, and priorities. You will lead the Agents & Evaluation product team

  • Act as the Foundation’s primary product counterpart to Sentient Labs’ research and product teams. You will translate their research into Foundation products and align roadmaps across both organizations.

  • Package technical work into products people can use, such as docs, demos, benchmarks, leaderboards, blog posts, and developer workflows.

  • Run developer-facing programs: public challenges, competitions, hackathons, cohorts, and partner-backed launches.

  • Build feedback loops from developers, researchers, partners, and open-source contributors back into the roadmap.

  • Shape product strategy for emerging categories, such as agent evaluation, open-source AI distribution.

What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years of product experience in AI/ML, developer platforms, infrastructure, or technical tools, including leading a product team or owning a product function.

  • Experience leading people and operating as a senior cross-org partner. You will own a function, mentor PMs, and work as a peer to research and engineering leadership.

  • A track record of shipping complex 0-to-1 products in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.

  • Hands-on familiarity with LLMs, AI agents, evals, benchmarking, or model deployment workflows. Technical background is required to debate tradeoffs with researchers and engineers.

  • Exceptional communication: you turn dense technical work into product narratives developers and partners actually read.

  • High ownership and urgency; comfortable being the connective tissue across many stakeholders.

Nice to Have
  • You've built or run benchmarks, leaderboards, eval systems, or open-source programs.

  • Knowledge of agent architectures, tool-calling systems, safety evaluations, or AI governance.

  • Experience with product-led growth, developer communities, technical GTM, or ecosystem programs.

  • Enough full-stack fluency (e.g., Next.js, Postgres) to prototype or pressure-test what you ship.
