A Remote Oil Rig job involves working on offshore or isolated land-based drilling sites to extract oil and gas. These roles can include positions such as drillers, rig operators, engineers, and technicians. Workers typically stay on-site for weeks at a time, following a rotating schedule. The job requires physical endurance, technical skills, and strict adherence to safety protocols. Due to the remote location, accommodations, meals, and transportation are usually provided by the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the remote oil rig position?

To thrive on a remote oil rig, you need a strong background in mechanical, electrical, or drilling operations as well as relevant safety certifications such as HAZWOPER, Well Control, or Offshore Survival (BOSIET). Familiarity with drilling equipment, SCADA systems, and safety compliance technology is essential. Adaptability, effective teamwork, and clear communication skills are critical due to the challenging and isolated work environment. These abilities ensure safe, efficient operations and support the wellbeing of the entire crew in high-risk settings.

What is the typical work schedule and living arrangement for employees on remote oil rigs?

Most remote oil rig roles operate on a rotational schedule, such as two weeks on followed by two weeks off, allowing for extended time at home between shifts. Full-time

Re-posted 11 days ago

Job description

NOW HIRING: OVERHEAD CRANE & HOIST SERVICE TECHNICIAN | PENNSYLVANIA or CONTINENTAL U.S. (TRAVEL)

Field-Based | Local & Travel Roles Available | Multiple U.S. Locations

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate up to $45/hour+ based on experience, skills, location, and credentials | Top-performing technicians regularly earn substantially more through overtime, travel pay, premium site incentives, and specialized project work

If you’re a technician who can work independently, troubleshoot complex issues in the field, and take ownership of customer outcomes—this role will feel like a natural fit.

At American Crane & Equipment Corporation (ACECO), we’re looking for experienced Crane & Hoist Technicians who can operate in real-world environments where safety, uptime, and technical execution matter.

This is not a shop role sitting under constant supervision. This is field service work where you are trusted to diagnose problems, make decisions, and represent ACECO directly with customers.

You won’t be just another tech number here. Strong technicians build real reputations at ACECO.

What This Role Really Is

This is a field-based service role—you’ll spend most of your time traveling to customer sites, diagnosing problems, performing repairs, and being accountable for getting equipment safely back into operation with minimal supervision.

Who Thrives Here (and Who Doesn’t)

You’ll do well here if you:

  • Take ownership of field work and solve problems without being told what to do
  • Are comfortable working independently in customer environments
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and internal teams

This role is likely not a fit if you:

  • Prefer working in a shop or controlled environment
  • Need constant direction or supervision
  • Struggle with travel, on-call responsibilities, or customer-facing work

What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)

  • Learn ACECO service standards, safety expectations, and documentation processes
  • Independently complete inspections, maintenance, and basic repairs
  • Build trust with customers through professionalism and technical competence
  • Accurately document service work and communicate findings
  • Begin handling more complex troubleshooting scenarios independently

Why Join Our Team at American Crane?

  • Field Impact – Your work directly affects customer safety and equipment uptime
  • Autonomy – Work independently with strong internal support
  • Technical Growth – Work on complex industrial and nuclear lifting equipment that many technicians never get exposure to
  • Stability – Established company with long-term workforce and strong reputation

What You’ll Do

Field Service & Technical Work

  • Travel to customer sites to perform inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs
  • Service electric overhead cranes and hoists (mechanical and electrical systems)
  • Troubleshoot and repair 480 VAC / 3-phase electrical systems
  • Perform work independently while adhering to all safety and quality standards

Customer Interaction & Communication

  • Communicate clearly with customers, supervisors, and internal teams
  • Represent ACECO professionally at all job sites
  • Provide clear updates and recommendations based on equipment condition

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete accurate service reports and documentation
  • Track work performed, findings, and follow-up needs
  • Maintain accountability for service quality and reporting accuracy

On-Call & Travel Responsibilities

  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Travel locally, regionally, and/or nationally as required
  • Support urgent customer needs when necessary

What We’re Looking For

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical or trade certifications preferred

Experience

  • 3-5+ years of hands-on experience servicing electric overhead cranes and hoists strongly preferred
  • Strong field service experience in industrial environments

Technical Skills

  • Strong electrical troubleshooting skills (480 VAC / 3-phase systems)
  • Solid mechanical troubleshooting and repair capability
  • Strong understanding of OSHA safety standards, lockout/tagout, and fall protection

Skills & Attributes

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong customer-facing communication skills
  • High attention to detail and follow-through
  • Reliable, accountable, and self-directed
  • Alignment with ACECO values: Work Hard, Have Fun, and Do the Right Thing

REQUIREMENTS

  • Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship
  • Ability to verify identity and employment authorization (Form I-9)
  • Eligibility to access export-controlled information where applicable
  • Willingness to undergo a background check in accordance with applicable laws
  • Willingness to undergo a pre-employment drug screen and randomized drug testing during employment
  • Ability to meet the posted work schedule and travel requirements
  • Ability to maintain reliable attendance and punctuality
  • Willingness to follow all company safety policies and procedures
  • Willingness to wear appropriate PPE when required
  • Willingness to complete required safety and compliance training
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to maintain professional conduct aligned with company expectations

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

  • Ability to travel locally, regionally, and/or nationally up to a total of 3 months within a 12 month span
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotation
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a REAL ID or valid U.S. Passport
  • Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to nuclear facilities and secure sites
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, climb ladders, and perform confined space work
  • Ability to work in industrial environments with exposure to weather, noise, and moving equipment

Customer Site Access Requirements

A significant portion of the work performed by our Crane & Hoist Service Technicians takes place at commercial nuclear generating facilities and other secure industrial customer sites.

Technicians in this role must be able to obtain and maintain customer-required unescorted access authorization and comply with all customer security, fitness-for-duty, and access authorization requirements throughout their employment.

Because access requirements are established by our customers and applicable regulatory authorities, additional screening may be required before or during employment. Depending on the customer and work assignment, this may include:

  • Criminal background investigations
  • Credit history reviews
  • Employment verification
  • Motor vehicle record reviews
  • Drug and alcohol testing
  • Fitness-for-duty evaluations
  • Customer-specific training, badging, and credentialing

Customer access determinations are made solely by the customer or applicable regulatory authority and are outside the control of American Crane & Equipment Corporation.
