Remote Ocean Engineer information

What is a remote ocean engineer?

A Remote Ocean Engineer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains technology and systems used for exploring, monitoring, and managing ocean environments, often working from a location away from the ocean itself. They use tools like remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater sensors, and data analysis software to support research, offshore energy, and environmental monitoring projects. Remote Ocean Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and may work for research institutions, energy companies, or environmental agencies. Their work helps ensure the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of marine operations around the globe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote ocean engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Ocean Engineer, you need a solid background in ocean engineering, marine systems, and a relevant degree such as ocean or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, remote monitoring systems, subsea robotics, and certifications like Professional Engineer (PE) licensure are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and adaptability to remote collaboration are essential soft skills. These abilities are crucial for ensuring the design, deployment, and maintenance of ocean technologies in challenging and often isolated environments.

What are some unique challenges faced by remote ocean engineers, and how can they effectively collaborate with on-site teams?

Remote Ocean Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited direct access to equipment and real-time data, requiring strong coordination with on-site crews. Effective communication skills and the ability to use remote monitoring tools are crucial for success in this role. Collaboration typically involves daily virtual meetings, shared documentation, and troubleshooting sessions to ensure smooth project progress. Embracing digital platforms and clear reporting structures helps bridge the gap between remote and on-site teams, ensuring everyone is aligned and potential issues are quickly addressed.

What is the difference between Remote Ocean Engineer vs Remote Marine Technician?

AspectRemote Ocean EngineerRemote Marine Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering; certifications in marine systemsTechnical diploma or associate degree; certifications in marine equipment maintenance
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and project planning remotely; on-site for installationsRemote diagnostics and troubleshooting; on-site repairs
Industry UsageDesigning offshore structures, subsea systems, and marine vesselsMaintaining and repairing marine equipment and systems
Common Search/ComparisonRemote Ocean EngineerRemote Marine Technician

Remote Ocean Engineers focus on designing and planning offshore and subsea systems, often working remotely with occasional site visits. Remote Marine Technicians handle maintenance and repairs of marine equipment, with a more hands-on role. Both roles require technical certifications and are vital in the marine industry, but their daily tasks and responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Overview

Lynker Corporation is seeking a Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist to support the Ocean and Tsunami Center (OTC) and the U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC), to support operational and research activities involving numerical sea ice forecast guidance. The Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist will evaluate guidance from systems such as the Global Forecast System (GFS), Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS), Seasonal Forecast System (SFS), Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS), and Navy forecast systems, with primary emphasis on improving the operational use of Arctic sea ice guidance for forecast Days 8-14 and exploratory application at other lead times.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist will include the following:

  • The Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist will perform the job duties independently and collaboratively, exercising initiative and applying innovative methods to evaluate and increase the operational use of numerical sea ice guidance.
  • The candidate will work with USNIC forecasters, NWS OTC scientists, model developers, and external collaborators to assess model performance, assess how IMS products could better support model initialization and evaluation, and demonstrate prototype extended-range sea ice guidance for the USNIC.
  • The candidate will also provide recommendations regarding the scientific and operational readiness of evaluated guidance for potential transition to operations.
Qualifications

The Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist selected should have the following:

  • Knowledge of numerical weather, ocean, sea ice, or coupled Earth-system modeling.
  • Experience in model testing, evaluation, or forecast verification.
  • Proficiency in Python for scientific data analysis.
  • Experience working with gridded environmental datasets and formats such as NetCDF or GRIB.
  • Experience working in a UNIX or Linux environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings to scientists, software developers, and operational analysts and forecasters.
  • The qualified candidate shall have a degree (e.g., BS, but advanced degree is preferred, e.g., MS or Ph.D.) from an accredited institution in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics and have at least 2 years of career experience in related areas.

The Ideal Sea Ice Model Evaluation and Applications Scientist will have the following:

  • Knowledge of sea ice analysis, forecasting, remote sensing, dynamics, or thermodynamics.
  • Experience with ensemble prediction or medium-range and subseasonal forecast evaluation.
  • Experience in workflow development, research-to-operations activities, or operational product development.
  • Experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcPy, or developing geospatial tools and workflows within an Esri environment.
