Remote Observability information

What is remote observability?

Remote observability refers to the ability to monitor, measure, and understand the state and performance of systems, applications, or infrastructure from a distance, typically using specialized tools and platforms. It is crucial for organizations that operate distributed or cloud-based environments, as it allows teams to detect issues, analyze metrics, and ensure reliability without needing physical access to the hardware. Remote observability often involves collecting logs, metrics, traces, and other telemetry data to provide a comprehensive view of system health and performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote observability engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Observability Engineer, you need expertise in monitoring, logging, and tracing, typically supported by experience in systems administration or DevOps and a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with observability tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, ELK Stack, and cloud monitoring platforms, as well as certifications such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Google Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are vital soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with distributed teams. These skills and qualifications ensure reliable system performance, rapid incident response, and seamless user experiences in complex, cloud-based environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in a remote observability role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Remote Observability often face challenges such as monitoring complex, distributed systems, ensuring reliable data collection, and quickly identifying the root causes of issues without physical access to infrastructure. To address these challenges, it's essential to implement robust monitoring tools, establish clear alerting thresholds, and maintain strong communication with development and operations teams. Regular knowledge-sharing sessions and continuous learning about new observability platforms can also help remote teams stay effective and proactive.

What is the difference between Remote Observability vs Remote Monitoring?

AspectRemote ObservabilityRemote Monitoring
FocusComprehensive system insights, including logs, metrics, and tracesTracking specific system metrics and alerts
ToolsOpenTelemetry, Grafana, JaegerNagios, Zabbix, Datadog
Work EnvironmentDevOps, SRE teams managing complex distributed systemsIT operations teams overseeing system health
CredentialsKnowledge of cloud platforms, scripting, and monitoring toolsBasic networking, system administration skills

Remote Observability provides a holistic view of system health through logs, metrics, and traces, enabling proactive troubleshooting. Remote Monitoring focuses on tracking specific metrics and alerts to detect issues. While both roles involve system oversight, observability offers deeper insights for complex environments, whereas monitoring emphasizes real-time alerts for system stability.

Sales Engineer (Remote)

Soda Data

New York, NY • Remote

$100K - $130K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Retirement, PTO

Job description

Data quality is the bottleneck of the AI era. Every Fortune 500 is trying to solve it. We're the team they call.

Soda is the data quality layer for Disney, Ralph Lauren, CBRE, HelloFresh, 2K Games, and Nubank. The category is growing rapidly because AI doesn't work on bad data.

We're hiring a remote Sales Engineer to work alongside our AEs, CRO, and the rest of the GTM team. You'll work on enterprise deals with the most technical buyers in the market, learn the full sales cycle from people who've built and sold to enterprises before, and grow fast.

Who this is for

Sales Engineers with a couple of years under their belt who want to level up. You've run demos, supported PoCs, and worked with AEs on real deals - now you want to do it at a startup where the deals are technical, and you can move fast without layers of process getting in the way.

You'll work directly with AEs, and the CRO on enterprise accounts. You'll run demos, scope PoCs, and own the technical side of deals - with support when you need it and room to grow into bigger deals as you prove yourself.

What you'll do

  • Run demos and scope PoCs alongside our AEs, from first technical call through to closed-won
  • Translate customer problems into Soda solutions, and translate Soda's capabilities into the customer's language
  • Build custom demos, sample pipelines, and PoC environments that show real value
  • Own product, technical, and security responses on RFPs and RFIs
  • Support customers through evaluation, purchasing, and implementation
  • Be the technical voice in the room - with Data Engineers, Heads of Data Platform, and Chief Data Officers
  • Feed product and engineering the signal from the field - what's winning, what's losing, and why
  • Travel occasionally to customer sites, team offsites, and conferences
  • Wear many hats - it's a startup, you'll touch every stage of the sales cycle

How you'll operate

  • Direct line to the CRO, Director of CEs, and product team - no layers
  • Ramp on Mid-market deals early, grow into enterprise as you prove yourself
  • Learn the product deeply - Soda Core (open source) and Soda Cloud (commercial)
  • Learn the enterprise data stack - Snowflake, Databricks, dbt, Airflow, Kafka

Requirements

Must have

  • 1-3 years as a Sales Engineer, Solutions Engineer, or similar customer-facing technical role at a B2B SaaS company
  • Undergraduate degree (or higher) in a technical field - Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or similar
  • Fluent in Python - you can read, write, and debug it in front of a customer
  • Experience running demos and supporting PoCs in customer environments
  • Strong customer communication - clear, calm, and honest under pressure. You can explain something technically complex to a Data Engineer and to a VP of Data in the same conversation
  • Builder mentality, process-oriented - you want to optimize and streamline boring processes. You write docs without being asked. You notice when a process is broken and propose a fix. You'd rather build an AI workflow to automate a repetitive task than do it manually three more times - and you have examples of doing exactly that
  • High horsepower and ruthless prioritization - you context-switch well, manage multiple projects with expansive ownership, and don't drop balls
  • Have a humble attitude, an eagerness to help others, and a desire to pick up whatever knowledge you're missing to make both your team and our customers succeed
  • Based in the US

Nice to have

  • Top university degree
  • Experience selling to data teams (Data Engineers, Data Platform, CDOs)
  • Familiarity with data quality, governance, or observability tools
  • Data stack fluency - Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, Kafka
  • Experience at a high-growth Series A-C startup
  • Experience building or presenting custom demos
  • Experience working remotely in a high-growth environment

Benefits

  • Base salary: $100,000-$130,000
  • Equity
  • Location: Remote (US-based)
  • Benefits: Unlimited PTO, 401k, medical insurance
Hiring process
  1. Phone screen interview
  2. Recorded demo - We'll give you access to the product. You'll record a short demo of Soda to a hypothetical customer.
  3. Technical interview
  4. Culture fit with the CRO and Director of Customer Engineering
