What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Nuclear Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Nuclear Design Engineer, you need a strong background in nuclear engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and a relevant engineering degree, often complemented by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard CAD software, simulation tools like MCNP or SCALE, and nuclear safety codes is essential. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills are crucial for collaborating remotely and managing complex design challenges. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant development of nuclear systems from a distance.

How do Remote Nuclear Design Engineers typically collaborate with onsite teams to ensure project alignment and safety standards?

Remote Nuclear Design Engineers often use a combination of secure digital platforms, regular video conferences, and collaborative engineering tools to stay closely connected with onsite teams. They participate in scheduled meetings to discuss design progress, safety considerations, and regulatory compliance, ensuring that all stakeholders are aligned. Effective documentation and communication are crucial, as remote engineers must provide clear design instructions and respond promptly to onsite feedback. This structure helps maintain high safety standards and project efficiency despite physical distance.

What are remote nuclear design engineers?

Remote nuclear design engineers are professionals who design and analyze systems, components, and processes for nuclear power plants or related facilities while working from a location outside of the traditional office or plant environment. They use specialized engineering software and collaborate with teams using digital communication tools to ensure the safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance of nuclear projects. This role typically requires a strong background in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, as well as experience with industry standards and codes. Remote nuclear design engineers may work for private engineering firms, government agencies, or nuclear facility operators.

Job description

Description
This is a Lead Nuclear Component Engineer position that offers a variety of interesting and challenging opportunities in component qualification engineering and will provide an excellent opportunity to advance your career. You will collaborate with a team including other component qualification engineers, interface with engineers from other disciplines, and guide the work of less experienced project team members.
You will work with an engineering team on projects for new nuclear facilities and upgrades and modifications to nuclear power plants in the following areas:
  • This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of component seismic and environmental qualification, structural mechanics, foundation load and component mounting analysis, and ASME Code calculations for Section III and Section VIII vessels, valves and pumps.
  • As a member of an engineering team, you will work on a wide range of projects for various clients. You will prepare and review design calculations, review test/analysis qualification reports from vendors, develop specifications, revise client design basis documents and support designers with drawing development
  • Perform the structural analysis and design of steel panels/cabinets, connections, equipment foundation loads and equipment supports including the effects from seismic loads
  • Conduct primary containment penetration design and analysis for design conditions including fatigue effects
  • Perform Seismic Qualification activities involving review of seismic test reports and preparation/review of analyses which include seismic loading
  • Perform Environmental Qualification life assessments using the Arrhenius method and updates to other qualification documentation
  • There is the potential for travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to plant site locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.

Qualifications
We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.
Essential skills and experience:
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in engineering degree with emphasis in Structural or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Ten or more years of experience related to component qualification activities in the nuclear power plant industry
  • Proficiency with structural mechanics analysis using Mathcad software
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards such as AISC, AISI, ASCE, ANSI and ASTM
  • Familiarity with Regulatory Guides, IEEE Standards and EPRI Documents associated with Seismic and Environmental Qualification
  • Experience completing ASME Section III design reports and/or design specifications
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Good written and verbal communication skills

Valued, but not required:
  • MSCE degree
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis using software such as SAP2000, ANSYS, STAAD, and/or STRUDL
  • PE license

AI & Automation at Sargent & Lundy
In this role, we expect people to be willing or able to lead others who use modern tools:
  • You are expected to lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Leaders in these roles often direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.
