What is a Remote Network Operations Center (NOC)?

A Remote Network Operations Center (NOC) is a centralized location where IT professionals monitor, manage, and maintain a company's network infrastructure remotely. The NOC team is responsible for ensuring network availability, performance, and security, often by proactively identifying and resolving issues before they impact users. Remote NOCs use specialized tools to oversee servers, networks, and other critical systems, providing support without needing to be physically present at the client site. This approach helps organizations reduce downtime, improve efficiency, and optimize their IT resources.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Network Operations Center (NOC) technician?

Core skills for a Remote NOC Technician include strong knowledge of network protocols, troubleshooting, and monitoring, typically supported by a degree in IT or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools (like SolarWinds or Nagios), ticketing systems, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA is highly valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail are essential soft skills for coordinating with teams and resolving issues efficiently. These competencies ensure rapid detection and resolution of network problems, maintaining uptime and reliability for critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a Remote Network Operations Center (NOC)?

Professionals in a Remote Network Operations Center often manage multiple systems and resolve technical incidents in real-time, which can be challenging given the need for quick decision-making and prioritization. Communication is key, as team members typically collaborate across shifts and locations to ensure 24/7 network reliability. Adapting to rapidly changing technologies and troubleshooting remotely without physical access to equipment requires strong analytical skills and resourcefulness. Despite these challenges, NOC roles provide excellent opportunities to hone technical skills and advance into network engineering or leadership positions.

Job description

Job Title: Network Engineer Location-Type: Onsite in Burbank, CA Start Date Is: ASAP Duration: (contract, perm, etc) 6 Month Contract to Hire (will convert to FTE) Compensation Range: 68-75$/hr W2 Benefits: Eligible for Health, Dental, Vision, 401K Must be authorized to work in the U.S. This position is not eligible for sponsorship .

We are seeking a highly skilled Network Engineer to design, deploy, and support the wired and wireless network infrastructure for a fast-paced enterprise office and an adjoining experimental studio/lab environment in Burbank, CA. You will serve as the primary on-site network resource, owning connectivity, switching, and wireless operations end-to-end. The ideal candidate is a true hands-on engineer — not someone who simply monitors a network — who is comfortable working independently, building relationships across technical teams, and staying calm under pressure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Network Engineering:
  • Configure and support Cisco switches, routers, and wireless LAN controllers/access points across the corporate office and studio environments.
  • Build and troubleshoot end-to-end network connectivity for enterprise users and lab/test environments alike.
  • Environment Split: Spend roughly 70-80% of time on core enterprise/corporate networking (VLANs, switching, user connectivity) and 20-30% supporting the studio's experimental testing environment (standing up connectivity, configuring ports, supporting test setups).
  • Physical Infrastructure: Deploy and terminate CAT5/6 copper cabling as needed for new and existing installations.
  • Wireless Support: Configure and troubleshoot wireless networks, including access point deployment and, where applicable, site surveys.
  • Platform Management: Utilize Cisco Catalyst Center/DNA Center and Cisco Client for network management, policy, and access control.
  • Monitoring & Tools: Use SolarWinds for network monitoring and wireless controller visibility.
  • Occasional Support: Provide after-hours or weekend support for studio testing or events, with flexibility to work remote/offsite the following day when this occurs.

Technical Requirements: Experience: True hands-on Network Engineering background (not primarily Network Operations/NOC), ideally from an enterprise or mission-critical environment. Technical Stack:

  • Deep knowledge of Cisco networking hardware — switches, routers, wireless LAN controllers, WiFi access points.
  • Proficiency with routing protocols: EIGRP and BGP.
  • Experience with Cisco Catalyst Center/DNA Center and Cisco Client.
  • Solid Layer 2 / Spanning Tree fundamentals and understanding of VRF Lite.
  • Comfortable deploying and terminating CAT5/6 copper cabling.
  • Experience with SolarWinds is a plus.
  • WiFi survey tools such as Ekahau Sidekick, and spectrum analyzer experience, are a plus.
  • 802.1X support experience (design, implementation, and ongoing access support) is a plus.
  • No degree requirement — real-world experience is what matters most.
  • MUST be local & commutable to Burbank, CA
