About Us

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. Our mission is to empower children and teens diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions—whether through art, music, writing, acting, or other creative outlets. Creativity supports healing, resilience, and hope, and we are dedicated to providing meaningful opportunities for young artists to grow.

Role Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Grant Writer (Volunteer) to support our fundraising and development initiatives. In this role, you will research funding opportunities, write compelling proposals, and contribute to projects that directly expand and sustain our programs. This is a collaborative and mission-driven position well suited to individuals with strong writing skills and an interest in nonprofit strategy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research and identify grants, foundations, corporate sponsors, and relevant funding opportunities
  • Write, edit, and submit polished grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and required documentation
  • Collaborate with program and leadership teams to gather metrics, impact stories, and reports
  • Track grant deadlines, application status, and reporting obligations in an organized system
  • Assist with donor communications, stewardship materials, and development-related writing as needed
  • Monitor trends in nonprofit funding and contribute ideas for long-term development strategy

Qualifications

  • 1–2+ years of experience in grant writing, fundraising, development, or nonprofit communications
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail
  • Strong research skills and ability to synthesize information clearly
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote environment
  • Passion for A Free Bird's mission and commitment to supporting meaningful impact

What You'll Gain

  • Direct exposure to nonprofit leadership and operations
  • Access to free educational workshops and open classes across multiple organizational departments
  • Letter of recommendation and certificate of completion upon successful completion
  • Networking opportunities with professionals, volunteers, and nonprofit leaders
  • Professional experience in administration and executive support
  • Flexible remote schedule
  • Most importantly, you'll directly support programs that bring hope and healing to children battling cancer.

Commitment Expectations:

To help our teams collaborate effectively, all volunteers are expected to:

  • Commit at least 6 months, though shorter terms (3+ months) may be considered
  • Contribute approximately 5-10 hours per week
  • Attend our 30-minute virtual team meetings every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Communicate proactively and work collaboratively with fellow volunteers

We're looking for individuals who are excited to grow with the team and can consistently participate in our weekly meetings.

Our Culture

At A Free Bird, we believe our volunteers are family.

We foster a friendly, collaborative, and positive environment where volunteers support one another, learn together, and work toward one shared mission: helping children with cancer discover hope through creativity.

We're passionate about using technology to improve how we serve our community and continuously innovate the way nonprofits operate.
