Job Requirements
Position Summary

The Neonatal Escalation Safety Telemetry (NEST) Program is a 24/7 remote monitoring center staffed by experienced Labor & Delivery Registered Nurses. The NEST RN remotely monitors fetal heart rate tracings for obstetric patients across all UMMS hospitals.

Working under the direction of the Nurse Manager, this role collaborates with bedside teams to identify concerning fetal patterns, escalate findings, and support patient safety. The RN also serves as a clinical resource and mentor while promoting evidence-based nursing practice.


Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and interpret fetal heart rate tracings remotely.
  • Identify abnormalities and escalate concerns to bedside nursing teams using established protocols.
  • Validate findings using the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Serve as a clinical resource for Labor & Delivery nurses.
  • Support evidence-based practice and patient safety initiatives.
  • Mentor new nurses and support staff education.
  • Participate in quality improvement, peer review, and professional development activities.
  • Assist with unit operations and support collaboration across L&D units.

Work Experience
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Maryland
  • Labor & Delivery nursing experience required
  • Strong fetal monitoring interpretation skills
  • Experience with electronic fetal monitoring systems and EMR
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills

Work Experience

Education & Experience

1. BSN Required

2. Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing is required.

3. Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification is required.

4. Minimum of 5 years labor and delivery experience is required.

5. Demonstrated evidence of professional growth and development through at least one of the following:

a. Current and active specialty certification

b. Current matriculation or completion of a degree or certificate program (Post Baccalaureate or higher, 12 credits or greater) within past 24 months

c. Formal teaching within past 24 months (portfolios including "Formal Teaching" require a signed "Approval for Formal Teaching" document)

d. Member of a professional association board or committee within past 24 months (not a hospital committee),

e. Actively participates as a peer reviewer for a professional journal (minimum of 2/year, portfolios including "Peer Reviewer" require a signed "Peer Reviewer Validation Form")

6. Maintenance of 20 continuing education hours /24 months.*

*Calculated in hours such as 30 minutes = 0.5 hour. Proof of attendance is required IV.
