The Optum Rx Technology team is seeking a Senior Manager of Software Engineering to lead multiple engineering teams driving Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) modernization initiatives. In this role, you will oversee the delivery of modern API-first architectures, microservices, microproduct platforms, and Source of Truth (SOT) services across core domains including eligibility, claims, pharmacy, product, and member services. You will partner closely with business, product, architecture, and infrastructure leaders to execute large-scale digital transformation and application consolidation, while developing engineering talent, managing program execution and budgets, and leveraging AI-enabled engineering practices and automation to accelerate delivery outcomes.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead multiple software engineering teams delivering complex PBM technology modernization initiatives across geographically distributed delivery sites
  • Drive the strategy, design, and execution of modern API-first architectures, microservices, microproduct platforms, and event-driven distributed systems
  • Oversee core Source of Truth (SOT) platform modernization efforts, specifically focusing on Eligibility and Claims domains
  • Direct domain engineering services across pharmacy, product, member, and claims functions to ensure enterprise scalability and operational excellence
  • Manage program execution, financial budgets, staffing models, vendor/partner relationships, and strategic technology roadmaps
  • Ensure engineering compliance with enterprise architecture, security, regulatory, resiliency, and operational standards
  • Partner collaboratively with business and product leadership to align technical execution with strategic modernization objectives
  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing technical managers and engineering talent across global teams
  • Drive continuous improvement by leveraging enterprise-approved AI tools and automation practices to streamline workflows, optimize developer productivity, and accelerate modernization outcomes

Required Qualifications:

  • 12 years of progressive experience in software engineering, application development, and enterprise technology delivery
  • 6 years of leadership experience managing software engineering teams, technical managers, and large-scale technology programs
  • Experience delivering API-first architectures, cloud-native applications, and Source of Truth (SOT) platforms
  • Experience leveraging enterprise-approved AI tools, developer productivity tools, and automation to streamline workflows and accelerate delivery outcomes
  • Experience leading global delivery teams across multiple time zones and regions
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (Azure or AWS), Kubernetes, containerization, CI/CD pipelines, DevOps, observability, and cloud security best practices
  • Deep technical expertise in REST APIs, microservices, event-driven architectures, distributed systems, and enterprise integration patterns
  • Proven track record leading enterprise modernization initiatives involving APIs, microservices, cloud platforms, and digital transformation
  • Proven success leading large-scale migration and modernization efforts, including legacy system decommissioning and application consolidation
  • Demonstrated program management capability covering budgeting, resource planning, vendor management, risk mitigation, and executive reporting
  • Driver's License and access to a reliable transportation


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or 4 years of equivalent software engineering experience)
  • Professional certifications in Cloud Architecture (Azure/AWS), SAFe/Agile leadership, or DevOps methodologies
  • Deep technical and functional expertise in core PBM adjudication engines and eligibility processing systems

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The salary for this role will range from $112,700 - $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
