Remote Mining Equipment Operator information

What is a remote mining equipment operator?

Remote Mining Equipment Operators are professionals who control mining machinery and equipment from a distance, often using computer interfaces, cameras, and remote controls. They play a crucial role in enhancing safety and efficiency by operating heavy machinery such as drills, loaders, and haul trucks in hazardous or hard-to-reach mining environments. This remote operation helps reduce the risk of injuries while maintaining productivity in mining operations. Operators typically require specialized training and knowledge of both mining processes and remote control technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote mining equipment operator?

To thrive as a Remote Mining Equipment Operator, you need in-depth knowledge of heavy machinery operation, mining safety protocols, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent with relevant operator certifications. Familiarity with remote-control systems, mining management software, and GPS navigation tools is often required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills in this role. These qualifications ensure safe, efficient equipment operation and minimize downtime or accidents in high-risk mining environments.

What are some common challenges faced by remote mining equipment operators and how can they be addressed?

Remote Mining Equipment Operators often face challenges such as maintaining clear communication with onsite teams, managing equipment malfunctions from a distance, and adapting to variable shift schedules. To address these, operators should develop strong communication skills, familiarize themselves with remote diagnostics tools, and participate in ongoing training. Regular check-ins with supervisors and effective use of remote monitoring technology also help ensure smooth operations and quick response to any technical issues.

Position Summary

The Sr. Sales Manager, Mining is the primary commercial driver for mtu power systems in the North American Mining market, responsible for managing sales opportunities from concept to contract across a defined territory and distribution partner network. This role owns the full sales cycle, from identifying and developing new business opportunities and securing service contracts, to building C-suite customer relationships and serving as the strategic point of contact for distribution partners. With direct influence over revenue growth, market share, and long-term customer partnerships in one of Power Systems' key industrial segments, this is a high-autonomy, high-impact role for an experienced commercial leader.

What you will be doing

  • Identify, develop, and close new business opportunities - work with distribution partners across North America to generate and advance sales opportunities for mtu power systems, securing contracts that drive profitable revenue growth in the Mining segment.
  • Build and own senior customer relationships - engage key customers at the highest management levels, negotiate and secure sales and service contracts (including VCA and EC agreements), and collaborate with the Service and Service Sales teams to deliver a total sales and service solution.
  • Manage accounts from a full commercial perspective - serve as the primary point of contact for distribution partners, address customer concerns promptly, provide guidance on policy decisions, and act as project manager when required to ensure smooth execution from concept through delivery.
  • Monitor the market and drive accurate forecasting - track industry trends, competitor activity, business conditions, and account status, reporting insights to leadership to support strategic planning and pipeline accuracy.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 50%).

Basic Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related field with 7+ years of experience in technical sales or service management of industrial equipment, OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business, or a related field with 5+ years of experience in technical sales or service management of industrial equipment, OR

  • JD/PhD in Engineering, Business, or a related field, OR
  • 9+ years of experience in technical sales or service management of complex industrial power systems in lieu of a degree
  • In order to be eligible for consideration, you must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent. Resident Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S without sponsorship. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time

Preferred Requirements:

  • Strong technical knowledge and proven success in value selling complex power systems, including diesel engines, to industrial customers.
  • Strong familiarity with mining equipment, operations, and the North American Mining market.
  • Experience with CRM platforms (Salesforce, SAP CRM, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar) and MS Office Suite, with a track record of maintaining accurate pipeline data, account records, and sales forecasting in a structured commercial environment.
  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-stakeholder sales opportunities from concept through contract (including project management involvement) in a distribution partner or channel sales model within the Mining, Oil & Gas, or heavy industrial sector.
  • Knowledge of mtu and/or Rolls-Royce Power Systems products, service contracts (VCA, EC), policies, and distribution network or equivalent deep familiarity with a comparable diesel engine or industrial power systems brand.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in a remote or field-based environment, make sound commercial decisions with minimal supervision, and communicate complex technical and commercial proposals clearly to senior customer and partner stakeholders.
