What is a Remote Mining Engineering job?

A Remote Mining Engineering job involves overseeing mining operations, designing efficient extraction methods, and ensuring safety, all while working remotely. Engineers use advanced software, remote monitoring tools, and data analysis to optimize mining activities without being physically present at the site. This role requires strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with on-site teams. It is common in companies that use automated or teleoperated mining equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Mining Engineering position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Mining Engineer, you need a strong background in mining engineering or a related field, paired with solid analytical and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in mining software (such as Surpac, Vulcan, or AutoCAD), experience with remote sensing technologies, and relevant certifications like a Professional Engineer (PE) license are commonly required. Strong communication, self-motivation, and effective time-management skills are essential for collaborating with on-site teams while working remotely. These competencies ensure safe, efficient mine planning and operations, even when working from off-site locations.

What are typical day-to-day responsibilities for a Remote Mining Engineer?

As a Remote Mining Engineer, your daily responsibilities may include designing mine layouts, analyzing geological data, creating production plans, and monitoring mining operations via specialized software tools. You’ll frequently collaborate with on-site engineers, geologists, and project managers through virtual meetings and report on project progress or safety concerns. Documenting findings, optimizing processes for efficiency, and ensuring regulatory compliance are also integral parts of the role. While you’ll work remotely, effective communication and timely response to on-site teams are critical for success. This setup allows for flexibility while still having a significant impact on mining operations and project outcomes.

Job description

SUMMARY
The Fleet Solutions Manager is responsible for driving the performance, reliability, and business value of Hitachi's installed mining fleet across North America. This role leverages Landcros Connect Insight, Landcros Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) data, fleet telemetry, condition monitoring, and external data sources to transform raw information into actionable insights and predictive analytics.
The position serves as a strategic leader in digital mining services, remote fleet monitoring, and autonomous haulage support, within the Regional HQ for Hitachi Construction Machinery. The Fleet Solutions Manager collaborates across HCMA, HCM Group Companies, dealers, and customer operations to improve productivity, extend asset life, optimize AHS performance, and deliver measurable value.
As the department leader for Fleet Solutions, additional responsibilities for development of internal capabilities and capacities for future growth are key to the position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Digital & Remote Support Leadership
  • Act as the subject matter expert for Landcros Connect Insight, remote health monitoring, performance analytics, and digital solutions for EX and EH mining-class equipment.
  • Lead the development and execution of remote support processes, diagnostic workflows, and predictive maintenance capabilities.
  • Proactively monitor fleet performance to identify trends, emergent issues, and optimization opportunities for both manned and autonomous fleets.
Autonomous Haulage (AHS) Support & Optimization
  • Serve as the HCMA technical and analytics focal point for Landcros AHS system performance, fleet reliability, and operational optimization.
  • Interpret AHS data (cycle times, queues, interactions, productivity KPIs) to identify improvement opportunities and support operational excellence.
  • Support mine site and AHSBU deployment teams and dealer partners in troubleshooting AHS-related issues, validating fleet performance, and ensuring stable and safe autonomous operations.
  • Work with customers, dealers and AHSBU Deployment teams to integrate AHS insights into planning, dispatching, and continuous improvement cycles.
  • Provide feedback to global AHS engineering teams for algorithm enhancements, system updates, and new feature development.
Dealer Enablement & Network Support
  • Train and consult with dealers and customers on digital tools, AHS monitoring, reliability methodologies, and proactive maintenance strategies.
  • Standardize digital reporting, fleet dashboards, and AHS performance reviews across the North American dealer network.
  • Provide high-level escalation support to dealers for complex diagnostic or system issues.
Fleet Performance & Reliability Analytics
  • Develop and maintain reliability KPIs, predictive models, and fleet performance dashboards for both conventional and autonomous equipment.
  • Conduct continuous improvement workshops and equipment performance reviews with dealers and customers.
  • Collaborate with Product Support and Engineering to address failure modes, systemic issues, and recurring AHS or telematics concerns.
Customer Engagement & Business Value Creation
  • Lead customer-facing performance review meetings, including AHS optimization sessions, remote monitoring reports, and predictive maintenance recommendations.
  • Provide actionable insights to reduce downtime, enhance productivity, and lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
  • Support mines in achieving AHS performance targets—cycle consistency, fleet interactions, autonomous availability, and operational readiness.
  • Identify opportunities for digital service expansion, LCS support contracts, condition-based maintenance programs, and fleet optimization solutions.
  • Support sales and product support teams in developing proposals, cost-benefit analyses, and presentations that demonstrate digital and autonomous value.
  • Contribute to the expansion and commercialization of HCMA's digital and AHS services portfolio.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Engineering, Global AHS teams, Product Management, and HCMA technical groups to enhance analytics, diagnostics, and AHS capability.
  • Provide real-world fleet and AHS performance insights to support product improvement and future development initiatives.
  • Support the "Path to Zero" strategy by aligning digital and autonomous technologies with customer needs and strategic growth plans.
Key KPIs
  • Customer satisfaction and retention rate.
  • Digital Service Sales funnel accuracy and CRM utilization.
  • Contribution to service utilization and rebuild program targets.
  • Improvement of Asset TCO, through measured and targeted Improvement initiatives

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mining, or Reliability Engineering—or equivalent industry experience.
  • 7+ years of mining equipment experience, including exposure to fleet performance, reliability engineering, telematics, or digital diagnostics.
  • Experience with autonomous haulage, autonomous mining technologies, or advanced fleet management systems (OEM or third-party).
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, with the ability to translate insights into practical recommendations.
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and executive-level stakeholders.
Preferred
  • Leadership experience supporting OEM dealers or mine operations.
  • Background in predictive analytics, RCM, failure mode analysis, or condition monitoring systems.
  • Proven commercial awareness regarding Mining Equipment Life Cycle Management
  • Experience supporting digital or service-based sales.
Skills:
  • Proven ability to identify sales opportunities and close deals.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
  • Proficiency with CRM software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Other Requirements:
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the assigned territory.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and customer service excellence.
  • Knowledge of mining practices and procedure. Ideally, MSHA certified but not required.
