Job Summary

As the Equipment Operator, you will ultimately be responsible for operating heavy construction equipment to support underground telecommunications and utility construction projects. You will safely perform excavation activities, avoid existing underground utilities, and assist with underground infrastructure installation while ensuring compliance with company safety standards and project requirements. This is a traveling position requiring extensive travel throughout the Midwest. As the Equipment Operator, your customers are Congruex project teams, utility providers, and broadband operators, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to)

  • Operate heavy construction equipment in compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Load, unload, transport, set up, and safely operate heavy equipment at project sites.
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and documentation for assigned equipment while maintaining daily communication with supervisors.
  • Safely operate heavy equipment around active underground utilities while preventing utility strikes.
  • Walk proposed work paths before excavation to verify utility locations and determine safe methods for crossing utilities and obstacles.
  • Perform excavation activities including conduit placement, proofing conduits, potholing existing utilities, concrete forming and pouring, asphalt placement, rigging, and setting structures.
  • Utilize proper shoring systems during excavation activities.
  • Inspect and maintain jobsite equipment and ensure compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and company safety standards.
  • Work overtime, weekends, and travel extensively as required to support project schedules.
  • Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs.

Required Qualifications

Education, Licensing, and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Active Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • DOT Medical Card required.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating heavy construction equipment.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience using utility locating equipment.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment around active underground utilities.
  • Experience with underground utility construction and excavation.
  • Knowledge of basic shoring systems.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to safely operate asphalt rollers, skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, vacuum trucks, bore machines, and similar heavy construction equipment.
  • Familiarity with underground utility locating systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and company safety regulations.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating Ditch Witch and Vermeer equipment.
  • Experience supporting underground telecommunications construction projects.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to maintain visual and audible awareness of crew members, vehicles, equipment, and surrounding work areas.
  • Must be able to work around heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, push, pull, and work in physically demanding positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, safety glasses, hard hat, and other required safety gear.
  • Must be able to travel extensively, including overnight travel throughout the Midwest.
