Remote Microcontroller Programmer information

What is the difference between Remote Microcontroller Programmer vs Embedded Systems Engineer?

AspectRemote Microcontroller ProgrammerEmbedded Systems Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in programming languages and microcontroller platformsRequires degrees in electrical engineering or computer science, often with certifications in embedded systems
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote, focused on coding and debugging microcontroller firmwareOften combines remote and on-site work, involving hardware integration and system design
Industry UsageUsed in IoT, consumer electronics, and automation industriesCommon in automotive, aerospace, and industrial automation sectors

While both roles involve embedded programming, Remote Microcontroller Programmers focus mainly on firmware development for microcontrollers remotely, whereas Embedded Systems Engineers handle broader system design, hardware integration, and may work on both firmware and hardware aspects in various industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Microcontroller Programmer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Remote Microcontroller Programmer, you need strong proficiency in embedded C/C++ programming, microcontroller architectures, and circuit design, typically evidenced by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with IDEs like MPLAB or Keil, version control systems such as Git, and experience with debugging tools and communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART) are standard requirements. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear remote communication skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver reliable solutions. These competencies ensure the development of robust embedded systems and successful remote teamwork in a highly technical field.

What does a Remote Microcontroller Programmer do?

A Remote Microcontroller Programmer designs, writes, and tests software (firmware) for microcontrollers, which are small computers embedded in devices. They work remotely to develop code that enables hardware components to function as intended, often for applications like IoT devices, robotics, and consumer electronics. Their responsibilities also include debugging, optimizing code, and sometimes collaborating with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks from any location using specialized tools and communication platforms.

How do Remote Microcontroller Programmers typically collaborate with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components?

Remote Microcontroller Programmers often work closely with hardware engineers through regular virtual meetings, shared documentation, and collaborative development environments. They rely on clear communication to understand hardware specifications, address integration issues, and troubleshoot problems in real time. Tools such as version control systems, simulation software, and remote debugging utilities are commonly used to bridge the distance and ensure efficient teamwork. Building strong relationships and maintaining proactive communication are key to overcoming the challenges of remote collaboration in this role.

Job description

Senior Firmware Engineer - Remote!

Base Salary: $145,000 - $190,000

Location: Remote (US-Based)

The Opportunity:

Are you a Senior Firmware Engineer who loves being deeply hands-on but is ready to act as a collaborative technical anchor for an engineering team? We are looking for a senior-level engineer who excels at leading by example through exceptional code contribution rather than administrative people management. If you are a team player who has spent the last year leveraging AI development tools to optimize workflows and want to help accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy future, this is your next move.

Must-Have Qualifications (Quick Screen)

  • Experience: 5+ years of embedded firmware development and 3+ years of hands-on IoT systems experience.

  • Core Languages: Mastery of C/C++ for embedded systems and Python for tooling.

  • Hardware & OS: Deep experience with ARM Cortex-M, STM32, or Microchip platforms, plus hands-on experience with RTOS (FreeRTOS/Zephyr) and embedded Linux systems via Buildroot.

  • Hardware Interfaces: Ethernet, USB, SPI, I2C, UART, RS-485.

  • Tools: Git, JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

  • The Intangibles: A collaborative team player with recent, hands-on experience integrating AI coding assistants into their daily development workflow over the last year. Comfortable navigating both new product introduction (NPI) and mature, legacy codebases.

What You Will Do

  • Hands-on Development: Design, implement, and optimize efficient, reliable real-time firmware for microcontroller-based IoT devices in resource-constrained environments.

  • Team Collaboration: Act as a collaborative senior presence on the team, working closely with hardware, software, and QA engineers to define interfaces and system architectures.

  • AI Workflow Integration: Champion the use of modern AI development tools within your daily workflow to accelerate coding, debugging, and testing performance.

  • IoT Stack Integration: Connect device data into cloud and application layers via MQTT or HTTP/HTTPS, and manage OTA firmware update pipelines.

  • Test & Debug: Troubleshoot complex firmware and hardware issues using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

Preferred (Plus) Skills

  • Wireless tech and protocols (Wi-Fi, BLE, Cellular, LoRaWAN, TCP/IP, Modbus).

  • Embedded GUI development (LVGL, TouchGFX).

  • Experience with Erlang BEAM, Embedded Elixir, and Nerves.

  • Background in energy management or building automation systems.

Benefits

  • Mission-Driven: A rewarding career directly combating climate change.

  • Growth Industry: Stable, well-funded company in the booming green-tech and utility tech sectors.

  • Comprehensive Benefits: Competitive pay, full health/wellness coverage, and 401(k).
