What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote MFT associate?

To thrive as a Remote MFT Associate, you need a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy or a related field, completion of required clinical hours, and state associate licensure. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, secure communication tools, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Exceptional listening, empathy, cultural competency, and strong communication skills help build rapport and trust with clients remotely. These abilities are vital for delivering effective therapy, maintaining ethical standards, and supporting clients’ mental health in a virtual environment.

What is a remote MFT associate?

Remote MFT Associates are early-career Marriage and Family Therapists who provide therapy services to individuals, couples, and families via telehealth platforms. They typically work under the supervision of a licensed therapist as they gain the clinical hours required for full licensure. This remote role allows them to meet clients virtually, offering flexibility for both therapists and clients, and expanding access to mental health care. Remote MFT Associates may work for private practices, teletherapy companies, or community mental health organizations.

How do remote MFT associates typically collaborate with supervisors and peers while working off-site?

Remote MFT Associates often engage in regular virtual supervision sessions, which may occur via video calls or secure online platforms, to discuss cases and receive guidance. Collaboration with peers often happens through scheduled team meetings, online forums, or group supervision, fostering a sense of community and shared learning even at a distance. Effective communication and comfort with digital tools are important, as much of the collaboration relies on technology. Many organizations provide structured opportunities for remote associates to connect, ensuring ongoing professional development and support.

We specialize in trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care across the lifespan, and we value the relational, systemic lens that LMFTs bring to treatment. At Foundation, you’ll enjoy clinical freedom, full caseload support, and a nurturing team environment where your expertise is respected and your growth is prioritized.

You’ll help clients navigate relational challenges, communication barriers, emotional regulation, and more. This role offers flexibility, support, and the opportunity to create lasting change in the lives of those we serve.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough relational assessments and develop treatment plans centered on client goals.

  • Provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families in person, via telehealth, or a hybrid model.

  • Utilize systemic, evidence-based models such as EFT, Gottman, or Structural Family Therapy.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members, including case managers and psychiatric providers.

  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation in the EHR system.

  • Participate in peer consultation, training, and quality assurance activities.

  • Support crisis intervention, safety planning, and resource referrals as needed.

Minimum Requirements
  • Active LMFT license in the State of Texas (required).

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or related field.

  • Strong working knowledge of family systems theory and relational treatment approaches.

  • Proficient with technology, including EHR systems and telehealth platforms.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ year of post-licensure clinical experience (preferred but not required).

  • Training in couples therapy modalities (e.g., EFT, Gottman Method, IMAGO).

  • Experience working with high-conflict families, co-parenting, or blended families.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation (hourly or per session).

  • Flexible scheduling – choose full-time or part-time, evenings or weekends.

  • W-2 or 1099 employment structure.

  • Full administrative support for billing, scheduling, and credentialing.

  • Documentation templates and EHR onboarding provided.

  • CEU opportunities and peer consultation groups.

  • Supportive, collaborative team culture focused on clinician wellness.
