What is a remote meta data scientist?

A Remote Meta Data Scientist is a professional who works for Meta (formerly Facebook) in the field of data science, but does so from a remote location instead of a traditional office. They analyze large datasets, build predictive models, and provide insights to help Meta improve its products and user experience. Their work may involve machine learning, statistical analysis, and collaborating virtually with cross-functional teams. Remote Meta Data Scientists use tools such as Python, SQL, and data visualization software to solve complex business problems.

How does a remote meta data science role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams despite being off-site?

In a remote Meta Data Science position, collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as product managers, engineers, and designers—is primarily facilitated through virtual communication tools like video conferencing, chat platforms, and collaborative project management software. Regular stand-ups, sprint meetings, and asynchronous updates help ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. While remote work offers flexibility, it also requires proactive communication and documentation to maintain transparency and foster effective teamwork. Building relationships remotely may take extra effort, but companies like Meta provide structured onboarding and virtual community events to support team cohesion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote meta data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Meta Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, expertise in statistics and machine learning, and a degree in a quantitative field such as computer science or mathematics. Proficiency with data science tools like Python, R, SQL, and platforms such as TensorFlow or PyTorch is typically required, along with experience using collaboration tools for remote work. Job description

Meta seeks an experienced leader to build and manage the company's local government affairs efforts in support of our data center site strategy across the United States. In this role, you will lead a team of regional local policy managers responsible for engaging with local governments—including cities, counties, municipalities, and regional bodies below the state level—to advance Meta's data center priorities across existing and future site locations, and to strengthen relationships in the communities where we build and operate. In addition to leading the team, you will personally manage local government engagement for a subset of priority localities. The ideal candidate brings deep experience in local and state public policy, political engagement, and issue advocacy, along with a strong track record of building and leading high-performing teams. Candidates should possess a strong understanding of internet, technology, infrastructure, and economic development policy, as well as deep knowledge of and passion for Meta's products. This role reports to the Director of State Policy and can be based in Washington, DC; Austin, TX; or remote in Texas. Frequent travel is required.
Local Public Policy Manager Responsibilities:
  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of regional local policy managers, setting strategy and priorities for local government engagement across Meta's existing and future data center sites nationwide, while maintaining a direct portfolio of priority localities.
  • Build and execute a national local government affairs strategy that advances Meta's data center site objectives across cities, counties, municipalities, and regional bodies—supporting both operational sites and new site development and expansion.
  • Work directly with local policymakers and officials to advance data center infrastructure investment, permitting, and economic development in the communities where Meta builds and operates its data centers.
  • Monitor the political environment and identify opportunities to advance local policies that benefit the company, local jurisdictions, and the communities where we reside.
  • Partner with Meta's Infrastructure and Data Center teams to align local policy engagement with site selection, development timelines, and community commitments for new and expanding data center projects.
  • Work closely with industry groups, nonprofits, municipal associations, and legislative organizations to promote company objectives for our data center policy priorities.
  • Ensure that Meta cross-functional partners and internal stakeholders receive timely updates on local policy developments.
  • Partner with Meta’s Community Engagement team to develop strategies for engagement with chambers of commerce, industry associations, non-profits, and civil society groups to advance priorities at the local level.
  • Represent Meta before local government bodies and coordinate advocacy campaigns in partnership with regional teams.
  • Manage relationships with local policymakers, contract lobbyists, and trade associations.
  • Willingness to travel up to 80% of the time based on need.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in political science, business/strategy, economics, legal, communications, public relations, or a related field
  • 12+ years of experience in local or state public policy, advocacy, or government affairs
  • Experience directly managing and developing teams, including people managers or senior individual contributors
  • Experience with the political process, policymakers, and stakeholders at the local and/or state level
  • Knowledge of technology, infrastructure, data center, and economic development policy and the advocacy landscape
  • Experience working cross-functionally with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing advocacy campaigns directly relevant to local and/or state government, including achieving short- and long-term milestones related to advancing policy, political, and/or advocacy goals
  • Creative problem-solving, negotiation, and multi-tasking skills in time-sensitive settings
  • Experience communicating nuanced concepts to a wide array of audiences

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leading geographically distributed teams across multiple regions
  • Experience managing contract lobbyists and trade associations
  • Strong familiarity with the local government landscape and technology policy and advocacy landscape
  • Experience with data center, infrastructure siting, or large-scale capital project policy and permitting
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize/redesign workflows and drive measurable impact (e.g., efficiency gains, quality improvements)
  • Experience adhering to and implementing responsible, ethical AI practices (e.g., risk assessment, bias mitigation, quality and accuracy reviews)
  • Demonstrated ongoing AI skill development (e.g., prompt/context engineering, agent orchestration) and staying current with emerging AI technologies
