What are remote medical data entry jobs?

Remote medical data entry jobs include a variety of roles that support health care by managing medical coding, patient documentation, records, and prior authorization requests. In this role, you work in a virtual office to sort nursing and clinical notes, file treatment plans, ensure the completion of medical records, and obtain information as needed to fill in any blanks. Remote medical data entry professionals often help answer requests for medical records from outside agencies, submit information to storage facilities, coordinate with transcriptionists, verify patient demographics, and sit for extended periods. This is a remote job, so there is less physical paperwork and more electronic paperwork than a regular medical data entry role.

What are remote medical data entry jobs?

Remote medical data entry jobs involve entering, updating, and managing healthcare-related information in digital databases from a remote location, such as your home. These roles typically require accuracy, attention to detail, and familiarity with medical terminology or electronic health record (EHR) systems. The data you handle may include patient records, billing information, and other sensitive healthcare documents. Remote medical data entry professionals often work for hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, or third-party vendors. This job usually requires strong computer skills and may require previous experience in healthcare or data entry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical data entry specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Data Entry Specialist, you need strong attention to detail, fast and accurate typing skills, and a basic understanding of medical terminology, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, spreadsheet software, and sometimes HIPAA certification is typically required. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear written communication are vital soft skills for remote work success. These qualifications ensure accurate, secure, and timely management of sensitive health information, which is critical for patient care and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced in a remote medical data entry role, and how can they be managed?

Remote medical data entry professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining data accuracy, ensuring patient confidentiality, and managing distractions while working from home. To address these, it's important to establish a dedicated workspace, use secure internet connections, and follow HIPAA guidelines carefully. Regular communication with supervisors and teammates also helps in clarifying any ambiguities and staying updated on data entry protocols.

American Data Network

Little Rock, AR โ€ข On-site, Remote

Contractor

Re-posted 19 days ago

Job description

Why ADN? Join the American Data Network family and become part of an established, purpose-driven healthcare quality organization with more than 30 years of experience. At ADN, our work supports hospitals and healthcare clients in improving quality, patient safety, and clinical outcomes. We value integrity, accuracy, collaboration, and professionalism, and we are looking for experienced abstractors who take pride in producing high-quality work.
Position Summary: American Data Network is seeking experienced GWTG STK/CSTK Abstractors to support accurate and timely stroke registry abstraction for assigned healthcare clients. This role is ideal for candidates with recent, hands-on GWTG STK and/or CSTK abstraction experience who can independently review clinical documentation, apply registry specifications, and meet assigned deadlines with a high level of accuracy.
This is not a general data entry position. Candidates must have direct healthcare quality reporting, clinical chart review, or data abstraction experience specific to GWTG STK and/or CSTK.
Position Details: ADN hires both contractors and full-time employees for Data Abstraction roles. Contractors must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collects and abstracts data from patient medical records, especially those related to stroke care. This includes information on diagnoses, treatments, procedures, and outcomes.
  • Ensures the accuracy and completeness of the abstracted data. This involves cross-referencing information from multiple sources within a patient's medical record.
  • Adheres to specific clinical data abstraction guidelines and standards, such as those set by the American Heart Association.
  • Enters the abstracted data into a database or registry, often using specialized software. This includes maintaining and updating the data as necessary.
  • Participates in quality assurance processes to ensure data integrity. This involves regular audits of the data or the abstraction process.
  • Remains informed about developments in stroke care and data management to ensure ongoing competency in the role.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • At least 2 years of recent GWTG STK and/or CSTK abstraction experience.
  • Ability to independently abstract GWTG STK and/or CSTK cases using registry specifications and clinical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare quality reporting, registry abstraction, clinical documentation review, and medical record interpretation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, documentation, and follow-through.
  • Comfort working in multiple EHRs, registry platforms, vendor tools, and data collection systems as assigned.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Contractors must have high-speed secure internet, a PC or laptop, and at least two monitors.

Preferred:
  • Experience using the GWTG registry platform, CSTK abstraction tools, vendor platforms, quality reporting system, and /or related data collection tools.
  • Experience with IRR, QA review, audit validation, and/or abstraction accuracy review.

Screening & Onboarding:
Qualified candidates will complete an initial phone screen and a GWTG STK/CSTK-specific abstraction assessment. The assessment is designed to evaluate understanding of registry specifications, abstraction judgment, accuracy, and completion speed.
ADN does not provide basic GWTG STK/CSTK abstraction training, so candidates should already have the abstraction experience needed for the role. After hire, ADN provides onboarding to ADN processes, client systems, EHR access, documentation tendencies, and other client-specific workflows.
Why This Role May Be a Good Fit: This position may be a strong fit for experienced GWTG STK/CSTK abstractors who enjoy independent work, flexible scheduling, stroke registry chart review, healthcare quality reporting, and contributing to meaningful work that supports hospitals and patient care. ADN offers a knowledgeable and supportive team environment, multiple abstraction opportunities, and potential growth into lead or expanded quality roles for strong performers.
