What is a remote medical assistant?

Remote medical assistants are healthcare professionals who provide administrative and clinical support to medical practices, clinics, or hospitals while working from a remote location. Their duties often include scheduling appointments, managing patient records, assisting with billing and insurance claims, and communicating with patients via phone or online platforms. While they do not provide direct hands-on patient care, they play a critical role in ensuring smooth healthcare operations and supporting both patients and healthcare providers virtually.

What does a remote medical assistant do?

As a remote medical assistant, you communicate with doctors, patients, and insurance companies via phone calls and chat messaging platforms to complete administrative and clinical responsibilities. You may be asked to gather medical history from patients, document reported symptoms, and assist with other telehealth duties. Telemedicine allows you to help more people, especially those in remote places. A medical assistant may also answer phone calls, triage patients, review insurance benefits, collect payments, and answer questions before a patient goes in for an assessment. You may also assist in coding and billing health care procedures, but this requires additional qualifications that you may not have as an assistant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote medical assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Medical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, administrative procedures, and typically a medical assisting certification or diploma. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, telehealth platforms, and secure communication tools is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for ensuring accurate patient information management, seamless virtual support to healthcare providers, and high-quality patient care in a remote environment.

How does a remote medical assistant typically collaborate with healthcare providers and patients in a virtual setting?

Remote Medical Assistants work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff by managing patient communications, scheduling appointments, and documenting medical information through secure online platforms. They often serve as a key liaison between patients and providers, ensuring that updates and instructions are relayed promptly. Effective collaboration relies on strong communication skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems. Regular virtual meetings and clear protocols help maintain a seamless workflow despite the remote nature of the role.

Search & ComparisonOften compared for clinical vs administrative roles in healthcareCommonly compared for front-desk administrative tasks

Remote Medical Assistants perform clinical support tasks and require certifications like CMA or RMA, working in healthcare settings. Remote Medical Receptionists focus on administrative duties such as scheduling and patient check-in, often without certifications. Both roles are vital in healthcare but differ mainly in responsibilities and required credentials.

Are remote medical assistant jobs legit?

Remote medical assistant jobs are legitimate positions that involve providing administrative and clinical support remotely, often requiring familiarity with electronic health records and communication tools. However, job seekers should verify the employer's credibility and be cautious of scams by researching the company and avoiding upfront payments.

Can a remote medical assistant do remote work?

Yes, a remote medical assistant can perform many tasks remotely, such as scheduling, patient communication, and data entry, often using electronic health record (EHR) systems. However, certain duties like clinical procedures require in-person presence, so remote work is typically limited to administrative and support functions. Certification and training in medical office procedures are often necessary for remote roles.

Job description

Travel Medical Assistant

Bring preventive healthcare directly to patients where they live while building a career that keeps you moving. In this full-time W2 Travel Medical Assistant role, you'll complete scheduled in-home wellness visits across U.S. markets, combining hands-on patient care, independence, and nationwide travel instead of spending every day in one clinic.

The Opportunity

This is a field-based Medical Assistant role focused on preventive care, care-gap support, patient relationships, and accurate documentation - not urgent care. You'll visit patients in their homes for wellness-focused appointments such as Annual Wellness Visits, Medicare wellness visits, and Well-Child Visits.

The current opening is connected to Prince George's County, Maryland, but this is a nationwide travel role. The right fit is comfortable working independently in different markets, adapting to changing coverage needs, and delivering a calm, respectful patient experience in the home.

What You Will Own
  • Complete scheduled home-based wellness visits with patients in the field
  • Support Annual Wellness Visits, Medicare wellness visits, and Well-Child Visits
  • Gather and document patient information accurately in an EMR/EHR system
  • Perform basic point-of-care support such as vitals, UAs, A1Cs, screenings, and questionnaires
  • Help patients feel comfortable, respected, and unrushed during visits
  • Manage a mobile field workflow while traveling between patient homes
  • Stay organized with visit schedules, documentation, supplies, and travel expectations
What Makes You a Strong Fit
  • At least 1 year of Medical Assistant experience
  • Medical Assistant credential, certification, diploma, or equivalent qualification
  • Hands-on clinical Medical Assistant experience with direct patient care responsibilities
  • Comfort working independently in patient homes
  • Comfort with local, same-day travel and extended travel assignments
  • Ability to travel nationwide anywhere within the U.S. based on business and patient coverage needs
  • Ability to travel frequently, potentially on a week-to-week basis
  • Reliable vehicle and valid driver's license for local or same-day visits
Nice-to-Haves
  • Experience conducting Annual Wellness Visits
  • Experience conducting Well-Child Visits
  • Prior home visit, mobile care, field-based care, or community health experience
  • Experience documenting patient visits in an EMR/EHR system
Travel Expectations

This is a nationwide Travel Medical Assistant role. Candidates must be able to travel anywhere within the U.S. based on business and patient coverage needs, potentially on a week-to-week basis.

Schedules are typically provided about 2 weeks in advance, including where you'll be going, when visits are scheduled, and how long visits are expected to last.

For local or same-day visits, you may use your own reliable vehicle, with eligible mileage reimbursed at $0.725 per mile.

For out-of-state or extended travel assignments, covered travel expenses may include transportation, car rental when needed, flights when needed, hotel, and meals.

Schedule & Work Model
  • Full-time W2 role
  • Monday-Friday
  • 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
  • Field-based home visit role
  • Current opening connected to Prince George's County, Maryland, with nationwide travel based on coverage needs
Compensation

The expected total compensation range is USD 31 Hourly.

What Success Looks Like

You'll be successful in this role if you can combine strong Medical Assistant fundamentals with the independence needed for mobile care. You'll help patients complete important preventive visits, support better health outcomes, and bring care to people who may not otherwise access it easily.

At Urrly, fairness matters. We use AI to review every application against the same clear requirements for the role. Candidates are evaluated only on job-related factors such as skills, certifications, and experience, not personal attributes.

Apply now and get a response within 24 hours.
