General Statement of Job:
The Medical Assistant performs assigned administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Practice Management, Senior Clinical Nurse and Physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments and maintaining medical records. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs, social determinants of health (SDOH) and medical histories, preparing patients for examination and administering medications as directed by physician.
Essential Functions:
  • Verifies patients identification in accordance with the policies and procedures.
  • Prepare exam rooms for patient visits ensuring that the rooms are neat, clutter free, clean and disinfected.
  • Perform vital signs, height and weight in preparation for the patient's visit.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information, including, but not limited to, SDOH, family, social,medical and surgical histories, medication reconciliation, appropriate screenings.
  • Assists with coordinating a warm hand off (WHO) to the appropriate behavioral health team member in response to any positive behavioral health screening result.
  • Requests medical records from outside providers or facilities when patient has informed team member they have seen another provider or been to the hospital since the last visit. Medical record requests will be handled per the existing procedure.
  • Ordering, performing, documentation of point of care tests (POCT) as per standing order protocol
  • Communicates any abnormal POCT results to provider upon receipt.
  • Ordering of Uniform Data System (UDS)required health maintenance screenings as per standing order protocol
  • Assist provider during the visit with any procedure, lab collection or exam as requested.
  • Performs certain medical procedures such as administration of subcutaneous and intramuscular injections/vaccines, POCT, suture/staple removal, EKGs, nebulizer treatments and ear lavage as ordered.
  • Checks the patient out after completion of the visit by providing instructions and education per providers orders, scheduling of next appointment, assisting with coordination of health maintenance screening appointments and completion of any additional pending orders.
  • Performs essential office operations, including maintaining various logs and control testing for POCT equipment and liaising with hospital and physician offices to assist with coordinating continuity of care.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Maintains, monitors and disposes of the biohazard waste into the biohazard containers per OSHA guidelines.
  • Prepares collected specimens for internal or external laboratory analysis, including proper labeling and completion of appropriate laboratory requisition forms. This includes following established protocols for ensuring proper handling of specimens and coordination with external lab pick up.
  • Assists with ordering of supplies by communicating with the ordering designee to ensure appropriate supplies are on hand.
  • Assists with the tracking of expiring supplies to ensure that they are removed from clinic use and disposed of appropriately at time of expiration.
  • Performs scanning of any documents, outside records or results, etc. that need to be part of the patient's medical record. Scanned items are labeled and housed in the medical record following the established medical record process.
  • Communicates results to the patients per the provider's instructions following the diagnostic result tracking procedures.
  • Maintains OSHA guidelines for the department.
  • Enters incident reports, complaints and grievances in the electronic event reporting system as appropriate.

Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties, including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural. Additionally, incumbents are required to perform emergency response and management duties for Palm Beach County as required.

Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required. Certificate or diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant Program required.
Experience:
One (1) year experience as a Medical Assistant is preferred.
Certification:
Current ACLS or BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required. Certification from AAMA, AMT,NHA or NCCT preferred.
