Reporting to the General Manager, EPIC, the Project Manager, Energy & Industrial IoT will be responsible for managing applied research through all development stages from proposal preparation to successful project delivery. The key project areas will range from battery, instrumentation/data acquisition, and automation systems.

This role is pivotal to the expansion plans of EPIC in key large projects with industry and community partners to provide full solutions integrating energy and communication expertise.

The incumbent will be the key point of contact for industry partners throughout the different project stages from a technical and project management perspective. In addition, the role requires to work closely with operations and technical staff from EPIC, as well as supporting business development activities related to the Centre's requirements. The role also requires mentorship of junior staff and students; whose active participation in real life projects is a core activity of the Centre.

The position will be responsible for working closely with industry partners and EPIC staff to plan, install, troubleshoot related infrastructure at the lab for capacity building and demonstration purposes.

The incumbent will act as the Centre's subject-matter expert in battery and communication systems and participate in dissemination activities to showcase the Centre and project results with industry partners and related conferences. The role also supports the short- and long-term planning including managing related initiatives; as well as ensuring that EPIC can effectively support its industry partners and improve the capabilities of the Centre and related students.

What you'll be doing:

Lead and manage staff related to applied research projects in the following areas:

Battery Systems

  • Leads testing and evaluation of battery systems for industrial and research use.
  • Performs performance testing under varying and harsh conditions.
  • Supports analysis of battery behaviour, sizing, and reliability.
  • Contributes to training and applied research activities.

Remote Data Acquisition & Edge Systems

  • Designs and deploys systems for real-time industrial and energy data monitoring.
  • Integrates sensing and communication technologies into unified solutions.
  • Develops portable systems for field and remote operation.
  • Supports hardware selection, system design, and implementation.
  • Assists with software and cloud-based data handling tools.

Industrial Networking & Automation Systems

  • Supports design of secure industrial and automation networks.
  • Works with deployment tools for remote system operation and monitoring.
  • Assists integration of custom solutions with enterprise systems.
  • Applies knowledge of automation and communication systems.

Managing Research Projects and Team

  • Manages staff, assigning tasks and assessing performance.
  • Provides assistance to the research team in conducting the research activities, including planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of the applied research project.
  • Coordinates and performs a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation, and interpretation of information/results.\
  • Provides relevant technical support and guidance to on-going lab projects.
  • Provides guidance as required to any staff and/or students assisting with the research project, as agreed with the Centre's General Manager.

Assists the General Manager in:

  • Collaborative service delivery development.
  • Taking active role in writing funding applications to acquire funding from federal and provincial agencies.
  • Collaboration and partnership with industry and academia.

Other duties as assigned.

What you'll bring to the role:

  • Minimum 3 year Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience in battery energy storage testing - battery characterization.
  • Experience with physical deployment of communication systems in remote environments.
  • Proven record of working in teams to deliver full data pipeline projects.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.

The successful candidate will also have the following skills:

Battery Systems - Technical Skills

  • Battery testing, characterization, and validation, familiarity with battery testing equipment and battery management systems.
  • Capacity testing and cycling analysis concepts.
  • Environmental and harsh-condition performance testing.
  • Battery sizing and system evaluation.

Remote Data Acquisition & Edge Computing Systems - Technical Skills

  • Distributed data acquisition (DAQ) system design and deployment.
  • Communication protocols: LoRa, cellular, Ethernet, CAN, MQTT, UART, SPI, I2C.
  • Cloud-based data processing and storage (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud).

Industrial Networking & Automation Systems - Technical Skills

  • Containerized application deployment (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Industrial communication networks and I/O systems.
