What is a remote machine learning robotics job?

A Remote Machine Learning Robotics job involves developing and implementing machine learning algorithms to control and improve robotic systems, all while working from a remote location. Professionals in this field use artificial intelligence techniques to enable robots to learn from data and adapt to new tasks. They collaborate with teams virtually, leveraging cloud-based tools and simulation environments to design, test, and deploy robotic solutions. This role typically requires strong programming skills, knowledge of robotics frameworks, and experience with machine learning models.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote machine learning robotics engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Machine Learning Robotics Engineer, you need a solid background in robotics, machine learning algorithms, programming (Python, C++), and typically a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with robotics frameworks (like ROS), machine learning libraries (such as TensorFlow or PyTorch), and experience with cloud platforms or remote collaboration tools are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, initiative, and effective remote communication skills help you excel in distributed teams. These competencies enable you to develop intelligent robotic systems efficiently, collaborate across locations, and drive innovation in a rapidly evolving field.

How do remote machine learning robotics professionals typically collaborate with hardware teams when working off-site?

Remote machine learning robotics professionals often collaborate closely with hardware teams through regular virtual meetings, shared documentation, and cloud-based development environments. They use simulation tools to test algorithms before deployment and rely on video calls or live streams to observe hardware tests in real time. Effective communication and detailed feedback are essential to ensure that software and hardware integration runs smoothly, despite working from different locations. This collaborative approach helps address issues quickly and keeps projects on track.

What is the difference between Remote Machine Learning Robotics vs Remote Data Scientist?

Job description

About the Companyย

At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business. A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight. Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.ย  ย

Meet The Team:ย

The Auto Tagger team is the engine behind our data flywheel, responsible for translating petabytes of raw, multi-modal vehicle data into a highly curated library of critical driving scenarios. By mining driving logs for long-tail events, we provide the foundational dataย requiredย for safe autonomous trucking. Leveraging Pegasus logical layers, this team structures and catalogs findings into an observations database that directly accelerates development across autonomousย perception, sensor fusion, and generative simulation testing.ย

What You'll Do:ย

  • Scenario Mining at Scale:ย Architect andย optimizeย distributed data pipelines to process massive multi-sensor logs (camera, LiDAR, radar, kinematics), automatically extracting and cataloging safety-critical and long-tail driving events.
  • Advanced Event Tagging:ย Develop and tune both heuristic-based and ML-assisted algorithms (including exploring Vision-Language Models or semantic vector search) to automatically classifyย and describeย complex environmental and behavioral scenarios.
  • Standardized Data Structuring:ย Extract and format scenario dataย utilizingย the Pegasus layer standard (alongsideย opensourceย frameworks)ย to ensure semantic consistency and rigorous metadata integrity.
  • Data Flywheel Integration:ย Manage the ingestion of tagged events into the observations database, enabling high-speed querying and retrieval for ML training, regression testing, and system validation.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment:ย Operateย with broad autonomy to drive consensus across organizational boundaries. Collaborate closely with downstream consumers inย perception, simulation, and systems engineering to define what constitutes an "interesting scenario" and operationalize a continuous data loop.
  • Mentorship & Team Growth:ย Guide, mentor, and elevate less-experienced engineers. Lead design reviews,ย establishย coding standards, and foster a culture of technical excellence and collaborative problem-solving.ย

What You'll Need to Succeed:ย

  • BS or MSย in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a STEM field, withย 6+ yearsย in data engineering, ML systems, or autonomous data curation.
  • Core Languages:ย Strong Python and SQL skills, with heavy experience processing massive time-series or unstructured datasets.
  • ML & Dataset Curation:ย Hands-on machine learning and dataset curation experience, with a demonstrated history of implementing targeted datasets that measurably improve downstream model performance.
  • Data Exploration:ย Hands-on experience using Databricks (or similar platforms) for large-scale analytics, interactive querying, and making massive vehicle datasets searchable.
  • Cloud & Compute:ย Expertiseย in distributed compute frameworks (Ray, Spark, Beam) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) for executing heavy data workloads.
  • AV Standards:ย Experience parsing complex data formats and applying scenario-description standards like Pegasus layers.
  • Communication:ย Exceptional ability to translate complex data engineering challenges into clear strategies for cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Technical Leadership:ย Provenย track recordย of mentoring teams, driving system architecture, and defining engineering roadmaps.ย

Bonus Points!ย

  • Auto-labeling & VLMs:ย Familiarity with foundational models, auto-labeling pipelines, or zero-shot classification for scenario extraction.
  • Model Serving:ย Experience withย vLLM,ย SGLang, or similar frameworks for highly optimized, high-throughput model serving and inference
  • Semantic Inference:ย Experience with semantic extraction and attribute mapping to helpย build outย a robust semantic inference engine, moving beyond standard bounding-box object detection.
  • Data Tooling:ย Familiarity with parsing robotics formats (ROS bags, MCAP) andย optimizingย high-performance columnar storage formats (Parquet, Arrow).
  • Downstream Integration:ย Knowledge of how scenario data feeds into generative simulation workflows, neural rendering, or sensor fusion validation.
  • Advanced Retrieval:ย Experience building semantic retrieval systems or vector databases for automotive data.ย
