What is remote litigation?

Remote litigation refers to the process of handling legal disputes and court cases through virtual means, such as video conferencing, electronic filing, and online communication. This allows attorneys, clients, and witnesses to participate in hearings, trials, and depositions without being physically present in a courtroom. Remote litigation has become increasingly common due to advancements in technology and the need for flexibility, especially during situations like the COVID-19 pandemic. It offers benefits such as reduced travel time and costs, but also requires familiarity with digital tools and adherence to court protocols for virtual proceedings.

How does working remotely as a litigation attorney impact collaboration with colleagues and clients?

Remote litigation attorneys typically rely on digital tools such as video conferencing, secure document sharing, and case management platforms to communicate and collaborate with team members and clients. While this setup offers flexibility, it also requires strong organizational skills and proactive communication to ensure everyone stays aligned on case strategy and deadlines. Regular virtual meetings and clear documentation become essential to maintain effective teamwork and client service. Many firms have adapted their workflows to support remote litigation, making collaboration efficient, though it may take time to adjust if you are new to remote legal work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote litigation attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Litigation Attorney, you need strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills, typically backed by a law degree and bar admission. Familiarity with digital case management systems, e-discovery platforms, and secure video conferencing tools is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating virtually and staying productive. These skills and qualities are vital to effectively manage cases, meet deadlines, and represent clients successfully in a remote environment.

Location (city, state): Remote – United States

Assignment Type: Contract – 6+ months

Pay: $30–$40 per hour

Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday–Friday, approximately 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Some flexibility is available to accommodate a team working across multiple time zones.

Benefits: This position is eligible for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).

About Our Client:

Our client is a well-established financial services organization with a nationwide presence. The organization supports a variety of lending and financial operations and maintains a collaborative Legal team focused on litigation, regulatory matters, risk management, and legal operations.

This position joins a busy, close-knit Legal team handling a substantial volume of active and legacy matters. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, managing competing priorities, and contributing in a fast-moving environment.

Job Description:

Addison Group is seeking an experienced Litigation Paralegal to support our client’s Legal department. This role will provide day-to-day assistance with litigation administration, legal correspondence, case documentation, and matter tracking.

The position is highly administrative at the outset, with an emphasis on organizing information, maintaining records, processing incoming materials, and supporting established legal workflows. As the individual becomes familiar with the team’s processes and demonstrates strong performance, the role will expand into broader paralegal and litigation support responsibilities.

The ideal candidate is an experienced legal professional who can step into a high-volume environment, work with limited direction, and maintain a high degree of accuracy and organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor designated Legal inboxes and service-of-process channels for new correspondence and incoming matters.
  • Review incoming legal communications and determine the appropriate level of urgency and routing.
  • Organize and maintain electronic case files, correspondence, pleadings, notices, and related documentation.
  • Identify litigation materials, subpoenas, demand letters, complaints, regulatory communications, and other time-sensitive documents requiring prompt attention.
  • Direct incoming matters to the appropriate attorney, paralegal, or internal business partner.
  • Track important court, regulatory, service-of-process, and response deadlines and promptly communicate potential concerns.
  • Maintain detailed logs documenting receipt, assignment, status, and follow-up of legal matters.
  • Follow up on outstanding requests and matters requiring additional documentation or action.
  • Keep case-management systems and matter records current as litigation activity progresses.
  • Maintain orderly email and service-of-process queues to ensure open items remain visible and actionable.
  • Support accurate litigation and complaint reporting through consistent tracking and data maintenance.
  • Assist with reviewing complaint activity for recurring issues, trends, or potential areas of legal risk.
  • Provide attorneys and senior legal staff with case documents, matter information, status updates, and other litigation-related support.
  • Assist with improving administrative procedures and workflows within the Legal department.
  • Perform additional paralegal and Legal operations duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 5–8+ years of professional experience in litigation-focused paralegal or legal administrative roles is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high-volume legal or administrative environment.
  • Background in banking, lending, loan servicing, or a related field is strongly required.
  • Related industry experience may include real estate, title, foreclosure, trust, insurance claims, compliance, or comparable financial/legal operations.
  • Previous experience working in a fully remote environment is required.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and time-critical information with discretion and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing assignments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Slack.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies or a related field preferred.
  • Paralegal certificate is a plus.
  • Must be comfortable working independently while collaborating with a geographically dispersed team.

Additional Details:

  • Remote experience required.
  • This is a fully remote position; it is not a hybrid opportunity.
  • The team works across multiple U.S. time zones, so flexibility and comfort with remote collaboration are important.
  • This is a newly added position supporting a growing workload.
  • The Legal team consists of 5+ members.
  • Standard schedule is approximately 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, with flexibility based on team needs and time zones.
  • Overtime may be available with prior supervisor approval.

Perks:

  • Fully remote work environment
  • Opportunity to join a collaborative Legal team
  • Exposure to litigation, legal operations, and financial services matters
  • Potential to take on expanded responsibilities as familiarity with the role and processes develops
  • Competitive hourly compensation
  • Addison Group benefits eligibility
