What does a remote Linux device driver developer do?

A Remote Linux Device Driver Developer designs, develops, tests, and maintains device drivers for the Linux operating system while working remotely. Their main responsibility is to enable hardware devices, such as network cards or storage controllers, to communicate properly with Linux-based systems. This role involves writing low-level code in languages like C, debugging kernel modules, and collaborating with hardware and software engineers to ensure compatibility and performance. Remote work allows these developers to collaborate with teams worldwide using communication tools and version control systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Linux device driver developer?

To thrive as a Remote Linux Device Driver Developer, you need strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, Linux kernel architecture, and hardware interface protocols, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with development tools like Git, GDB, and cross-compilation toolchains, as well as experience with kernel module development, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication set top candidates apart in this role. These skills ensure robust driver performance, smooth hardware integration, and efficient collaboration across distributed teams.

How does a remote Linux device driver developer typically collaborate with hardware and QA teams?

As a Remote Linux Device Driver Developer, collaboration with hardware engineers and QA teams is crucial to ensure drivers are robust and compatible with target devices. Communication is typically managed through regular video meetings, documentation, and issue tracking platforms like Jira or GitHub. Developers often review hardware specifications, participate in design discussions, and respond to QA feedback on bugs or performance issues. This collaborative workflow ensures hardware-software integration is seamless, even when teams are distributed globally.

Job description

About the Job

The Red Hat Linux Virtualization Networking team is seeking an Associate Software Engineer with a deep passion for system-level engineering and low-level operating system components. The RHEL Virtualization group is responsible for all aspects related to Virtualization in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including system, firmware, device and network emulation, as well as their counterpart aspects in the guest instance on top of Red Hat or third-party virtualized platforms. In this role, you will design, implement, test, and automate deployment tools and solutions, contributing to industry-leading technologies like Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and community distributions such as CentOS Stream and Fedora. As part of a geographically distributed team, you will collaborate with multiple Red Hat engineering teams and open-source communities around the globe. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the brightest engineers in the open-source industry.

What You Will Do

  • Design and develop code to implement new features and resolve defects primarily in open-source community projects related to virtualization and networking technologies

  • Actively contribute to and collaborate with teams enabling new features in Red Hat layered products across virtualization and container solutions

  • Engage actively in the open-source community; review patches and provide technical feedback on community-oriented enhancements and bug fixes

  • Develop and contribute tests into a continuous integration (CI) workflow

  • Work effectively as part of a distributed, agile team

What You Will Bring

  • 2+ years of relevant experience in system-level software development for Linux, preferably using C or C++

  • Strong understanding of networking concepts, such as communication layers, protocols, network interfaces and architectures; experience with packet-level debugging and transport protocols such as TCP is a plus

  • Technical proficiency in the Linux Networking stack, or other low-level subsystems

  • Strong knowledge of operating systems and computer architecture concepts

  • Strong system-level debugging skills (e.g., GDB, strace, BPF traces, etc.)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is beneficial

Considered a Plus

  • Development experience with KVM and QEMU and the Linux Virtualization stack,

  • particularly in areas like memory management, IOMMU, device assignment, or other low-level subsystems

  • Familiarity with open-source development and active engagement in communities such as the Linux kernel, distributions, or similar projects, ideally with a history of active open source contributions

  • Rust, Python, Go, or shell script programming experience; familiarity with security topics and defensive programming techniques

  • Experience with Linux drivers development and with the Linux kernel networking subsystem

  • Experience with multiple hardware platforms (e.g., x86, ARM64, s390x, RISC-V)

  • Prior experience speaking at conferences, publishing technical blogs/articles, or holding patents

The salary range for this position is $76,830.00 - $154,190.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.
