Work EnvironmentServer management, scripting, system troubleshootingNetwork setup, monitoring, security, hardware configuration
Industry UsageIT, hosting, cloud servicesTelecommunications, enterprise networks

The Remote Linux Admin primarily focuses on managing Linux servers, ensuring system stability, and automating tasks, while the Remote Network Administrator handles network infrastructure, security, and connectivity. Both roles require technical certifications and often work remotely in IT or tech industries, but their core responsibilities differ in system versus network management.

What is a remote Linux admin?

A Remote Linux Admin is an IT professional who manages and maintains Linux servers and systems from a remote location. Their responsibilities include installing, configuring, updating, and troubleshooting Linux operating systems, as well as monitoring system performance and ensuring security. They use remote access tools to connect to servers, handle user permissions, automate tasks with scripts, and resolve technical issues. This role is essential for organizations that rely on Linux-based infrastructure but do not require on-site administration. Remote Linux Admins often support cloud environments and work across different time zones to ensure constant system availability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Linux admin?

To thrive as a Remote Linux Admin, you need in-depth knowledge of Linux operating systems, system administration, networking, and scripting, typically supported by relevant experience or certifications like CompTIA Linux+ or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA). Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix), configuration management (Ansible, Puppet), and remote access protocols (SSH) is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and self-motivation help remote admins efficiently troubleshoot and collaborate with distributed teams. These skills ensure reliable system performance, security, and effective support in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Linux admins, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Linux Administrators often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting issues without physical access to servers, ensuring secure remote connections, and managing time zone differences across distributed teams. To address these, administrators typically rely on robust remote management tools, establish clear communication protocols, and implement strict security measures like VPNs and multi-factor authentication. Staying organized and maintaining detailed documentation also help keep remote work efficient and collaborative.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Systems Administrator ensures the stable operation of Customer's computer software systems and network connections in support of the DoD. This role responsible for planning, installing, configuring, maintaining, and optimizing network software and communication links; resolving end-user software and connectivity issues; sustaining the customer's application across its Windows/.Net/ColdFusion and Linux stack and Oracle/SQL databases; and performing vulnerability management to keep mission systems secure and available. This position requires an active Secret clearance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, develop, install, configure, maintain, support, and optimize all network software and communication links to ensure the stable operation of DoD computer software systems and network connections
  • Analyze and resolve end-user software program and connectivity issues, and provide end-user training
  • Provide recommendations on technology direction to align with the business vision
  • Provide local and remote maintenance to operational systems deployed at more than one location, including general maintenance, upgrades, and new installs of servers and applications
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge of application networking, including load balancing applications and ensuring fault tolerance
  • Support application sustainment across Windows and Linux environments — including .Net and ColdFusion user interfaces and underlying processes — by resolving incident tickets, developing triage documentation, performing change management through ServiceNow, and supporting migration of application components into DoD Enterprise systems (EBS, EA2, DLA Azure Cloud)
  • Support Oracle and Microsoft SQL database implementations in physical and cloud environments, including creating tables, views, and indexes; running Oracle AWR reports; performance tuning; and researching, documenting, and remediating STIG findings
  • Produce ad-hoc queries and business intelligence reports (Qlik or Power BI), including contract and vendor performance metrics and item/customer demand and savings reports
  • Perform vulnerability management — review Fortify and ACAS scan reports, interpret results, mitigate vulnerabilities, maintain STIGs, prepare fix plans in accordance with the Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M), and monitor software libraries for newly disclosed vulnerabilities
  • Implement and/or administer the Corporate Performance Management (CPM) platform as a systems administrator
  • Develop executive-level presentations and present to senior management

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active Secret clearance
  • Seven (7) years of progressive experience in Information Processing, including six (6) years specialized across numerous Information Processing disciplines involving a range of hardware/software solutions, and four (4) years of concentrated, hands-on experience installing, configuring, maintaining, and resolving issues with various software
  • Experience developing executive-level presentations and working with and presenting to senior management
  • Experience with business intelligence tools; Qlik or Power BI preferred
  • Proven experience as a systems administrator implementing and/or administering a Corporate Performance Management (CPM) platform
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer-service, and problem-solving skills
  • DoD 8570.01-M / 8140 IAT II baseline certification covering application, data, database, utility, or software-tools administration requiring privileged access (e.g., CompTIA Security+ CE or another DoD-approved IAT II baseline)
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate
  • Preferred: prior DoD experience and familiarity with DoD Enterprise systems (EBS, EA2, ServiceNow, DoD Azure Cloud)
