What is a remote librarian?

A remote librarian is a professional who provides library services and support to users from a distance, typically through online platforms. Their duties may include helping patrons with research, managing digital resources, answering reference questions via chat or email, and offering virtual instruction on information literacy. Remote librarians often work from home or other offsite locations, utilizing technology to connect with library users. This role is increasingly important as more library services move online to accommodate remote access and digital learning.

What does a remote librarian do?

Remote librarians manage online resources for a library. Instead of working in the office, remote librarians complete their job duties from home or another location with internet connectivity. Your specific responsibilities as a virtual librarian depend on the area in which you specialize. You can specialize in digital resource management, which involves obtaining electronic books and other resources and making them available to library patrons. A remote librarian can also organize a library catalog or manage a database of information and resources for research. University libraries hire remote archivists to obtain digital documents and resources and select those that have informational or research value for inclusion in an archive.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote librarian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Librarian, you need a solid background in library and information science, often demonstrated by an MLIS degree and experience with digital resource management. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), online databases, and virtual reference tools is essential. Strong communication, self-motivation, and customer service skills are crucial for effectively assisting patrons and collaborating with colleagues in a virtual environment. These skills ensure that information needs are met efficiently and accurately, regardless of physical location.

How does a remote librarian typically collaborate with patrons and colleagues despite working offsite?

Remote Librarians rely heavily on digital tools to support both patrons and team members. They often use video conferencing, live chat, email, and library management systems to answer reference questions, conduct research consultations, and participate in staff meetings. Effective communication skills and comfort with technology are essential, as remote librarians must proactively engage with users and colleagues, sometimes across different time zones. Collaboration is fostered through shared digital workspaces and regular virtual check-ins, ensuring that the library's services remain accessible and cohesive.

We are seeking a Mid-Level Software Engineer with full-stack development experience to join our product development team. This role is ideal for an engineer who is comfortable building features across the frontend and backend, collaborates well with senior engineers and cross-functional partners, and is eager to use AI-assisted development practices to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and delivery.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Angular, TypeScript, .NET Core, and modern software engineering practices, and is interested in applying AI tools thoughtfully throughout the development lifecycle while maintaining strong engineering judgment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop responsive, accessible user interfaces using Angular and TypeScript, following established design patterns and frontend best practices.
  • Build and maintain application features across the full stack, with emphasis on backend development using .NET Core and frontend integration in Angular.
  • Implement backend functionality using established architectural patterns such as CQRS, MediatR, and Onion Architecture under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Create, consume, and maintain GraphQL APIs, including working with schemas, resolvers, and efficient client-side data access patterns.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts (like VanillaCreme3.0 Libraries).
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, test creation, documentation, refactoring, and technical research while validating generated outputs carefully.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, and senior engineering team members to deliver user-centered features with attention to quality, usability, and maintainability.
  • Write clean, testable, maintainable code aligned with SOLID principles and team coding standards.
  • Develop and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests that support reliable delivery through CI/CD pipelines.
  • Participate actively in code reviews by incorporating feedback, identifying potential issues, and contributing constructive suggestions.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to simplify code, improve test coverage, and streamline development workflows.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and use Jira for task tracking, sprint planning, and delivery visibility.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering roles.
  • Proficiency with Angular and TypeScript for frontend development.
  • Strong experience with .NET Core and C# for backend application development.
  • Working knowledge of CQRS, MediatR, Onion Architecture, or similar clean architecture patterns.
  • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server, including writing queries, working with schemas, and basic performance considerations.
  • Experience building or consuming GraphQL APIs, including client-side integration and resolver-level concepts.
  • Proficient with GitHub for source control, pull requests, and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools such as Jenkins.
  • Strong advocate for clean, testable code and automated testing practices across the development lifecycle.
  • Practical experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Codex, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code for correctness, maintainability, security, and alignment with team standards.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the mortgage industry, particularly loan originations, servicing, or related financial workflows.
  • Familiarity with regulatory, compliance, data privacy, or audit considerations in financial services.
  • Experience using AI tools to generate test cases, improve documentation, analyze legacy code, or support refactoring efforts.
  • Exposure to secure coding practices and responsible AI usage in enterprise software development.
  • Interest in improving developer workflows through automation, AI-assisted tooling, and better engineering practices.
