Location: Remote (Maryland Residents Only)

Job Description
VECRA is seeking qualified ASL interpreters to provide on-demand interpreting services for The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). The position involves providing American Sign Language (ASL) services to both Frederick, MD and Columbia, MD campuses. Interpreters may be required to travel to neighboring areas such as the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia(DMV).

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret spoken language into ASL (American Sign Language) and vice versa, ensuring linguistic and cultural accuracy.
  • Facilitate clear communication between Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals and hearing individuals in corporate, government, or educational settings.
  • Research specialized vocabulary and terminology specific to the setting or subject matter.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing materials, agendas, and subject-specific content in advance.
  • Maintain accurate records of interpreted sessions, including noting any challenges or special circumstances.
  • Interpret effectively and impartially using various sign language modes (ASL, contact sign, PSE, oral transliteration).
  • Demonstrate strong active listening and interpretation skills to ensure precise translation and understanding of the spoken words.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of paid professional interpreting experience.
  • At least 1 year of professional interpreting experience in corporate or government settings.
  • Certification in ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL interpreting/transliteration (e.g., RID National Interpreter Certification, NAD certification, or state-specific licensure).
  • Proficiency in a range of communication modes: ASL, English interpretation, transliteration, contact sign/PSE, and oral transliteration.
  • High level of active listening and interpretation skills in diverse settings.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in ASL Interpretation, Deaf Studies, Linguistics, or a related field is optional.
  • Completion of an ASL Interpreting Program or equivalent formal training.

Other Requirements

  • Availability for varying shifts (Day, Evening, Overnight).
  • The position is primarily on-site support, but some assignments may require remote work.
  • Maryland residents preferred.
