Job description

At NorthBay Health, the Pharmacy Technician II works under the supervision of Pharmacy Supervisor and oversight by the Staff Pharmacists, performs technician functions and assists with drug dispensing and record keeping.  Maintains pharmacy inventory levels and integrity both within and outside the pharmacy.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

  • Prepares and labels oral, injectable and other medications, including neonatal and hazardous medications, for patients, under supervision and verification by a pharmacist according to departmental policies and procedures.

  • Reconstitutes additives, calculates volumes, and mixes IV solutions, nutritional products, under supervision and verification by a pharmacist according to departmental policies and procedures using aseptic technique.

  • Communicates with patient care areas and troubleshoots dispensing issues, IV's and general order clarification issues. Refers all clinical and pharmacologic questions to the pharmacist.

  • Prepares unit-dose packages of both oral and injectable preparations from bulk stock.

  •  Performs IV rounds to monitor for utilization of solutions with additives.

  •  Prepares IV labels and initiates and maintains IV additive profiles on all patients receiving medication solutions.

  • Credits returned and unused medication to patient's profiles in the computer.

  • Restocks and maintains inventory levels in immediate working areas.

  • Performs medication delivery rounds, restocks, and ensures medications availability to patient care areas.

  • Performs ADM activities including running of reports, restocking and billing.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Hours of Work:  Various shifts.

Compensation Structure

NorthBay Health uses a structured compensation framework. Staff-level positions use a step-based system (Steps 1-5) based on years of directly related experience, with Step 5 representing 20 or more years of experience in the role. Manager level and above positions are paid a fixed annual base salary and are eligible for a variable incentive compensation plan. Physician compensation is structured based on specialty and role requirements.

Education:   High school graduate preferred.

Licensure:   Registration as Pharmacy technician or Intern Pharmacist with the California State Board of Pharmacy is required.

Experience:   Completion of pharmacy technologist training program.  One year of institutional Pharmacy Technician experience required. Knowledge of the laws involved in hospital pharmacy practice.

Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must demonstrate competency in basic pharmaceutical calculations.  Ability to type 25 wpm and have previous computer experience.
