What is a remote lab technician?

Remote lab technicians are professionals who perform laboratory tasks and analyses from a remote location, often using digital tools and connected equipment. They may monitor experiments, analyze data, and communicate results to onsite teams or clients. This role leverages technology to allow technicians to contribute to laboratory operations without being physically present, which can increase efficiency and flexibility. Remote lab technicians are commonly employed in industries like healthcare, environmental science, and pharmaceuticals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote lab technician?

To thrive as a Remote Lab Technician, you need a background in laboratory science, strong analytical abilities, and relevant technical training or certification in lab procedures. Familiarity with remote diagnostics tools, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and digital communication platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for excelling in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring accurate data collection, reliable results, and seamless collaboration with remote teams.

How does a remote lab technician effectively collaborate with on-site staff and researchers?

Remote Lab Technicians typically use digital communication tools—such as video conferencing, lab management software, and shared data platforms—to stay closely connected with on-site teams. They coordinate daily or weekly tasks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and review experimental data in real time. Clear communication and proactive scheduling are key to ensuring that remote contributions align seamlessly with on-site workflows, and many organizations host regular virtual meetings to keep everyone in sync. This collaborative structure enables Remote Lab Technicians to support research progress and resolve challenges efficiently, despite not being physically present in the lab.

Employment Type: Full-Time

Base Compensation: $30–$35/hr ($62,400–$72,800 annually)

Max Annual Compensation (with incentives): $95,000+

POSITION OVERVIEW

Level 3 Advanced Technicians are the backbone of Servist Energy's field operations. You bring deep diagnostic capability, cross-platform technical expertise, and the judgment to lead under pressure. You're the go-to resource when issues are complex, stakes are high, and standard troubleshooting isn't enough. At this level, you'll perform IV curve tracing, advanced insulation resistance testing, SCADA troubleshooting, and breaker coordination studies — while also leading crews, interfacing with clients and manufacturers, and building the next generation of Servist technicians through hands-on mentorship.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Advanced Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution for complex issues across solar PV, BESS, EV, and SCADA platforms
  • Conduct IV curve tracing, advanced insulation resistance testing, and comprehensive system performance evaluations
  • Perform breaker coordination studies, power factor correction analysis, and electrical load balancing
  • Troubleshoot SCADA system errors, remote monitoring issues, and network communication faults
  • Perform high-level troubleshooting of inverters, transformers, relays, breakers, and switchgear
  • Apply advanced electrical diagnostic techniques to identify failures in controllers, communication networks, and storage systems
  • Serve as the technical escalation point for Level 1 and Level 2 technicians in the field

System Installation & Commissioning

  • Oversee installation and commissioning of solar PV, BESS, and EV charging systems
  • Perform system startup and performance verification tests; verify output against design specifications
  • Configure and troubleshoot SCADA monitoring systems and remote data acquisition platforms
  • Support creation of as-built schematics and commissioning documentation
  • Verify proper electrical wiring, grounding, terminations, and interconnection compliance
  • Work closely with OEM manufacturers to implement firmware updates and system optimizations

Field Leadership & Crew Management

  • Lead multi-technician crews on complex maintenance, repair, and commissioning scopes
  • Plan, sequence, and coordinate field workflows to ensure safe and efficient job execution
  • Fulfill administrative functions on site including scheduling, coordination, and O&M activity management
  • Perform workmanship audits and lead execution of special projects and oversight of specialty contractors
  • Represent Servist Energy professionally when interfacing with clients and site contacts
  • Prepare detailed service reports, failure analysis reports, and client-facing performance summaries

Mentorship & Training

  • Coach Level 1 and Level 2 technicians through advanced diagnostics, best practices, and professional development
  • May formally train others and contribute to structured training program content
  • Contribute to internal SOPs, technical documentation, and as-built schematics

Safety Leadership

  • Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) for complex or high-risk work scopes
  • May serve as designated on-site safety person for complex operations
  • Model and enforce OSHA, NFPA 70E, and NEC compliance across all crew activities
  • May obtain specialized safety certifications (thermography, confined space, etc.) as applicable

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3–5 years of experience in solar PV, BESS, EV charging, or related electrical service fields
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi-platform system diagnostics and advanced electrical troubleshooting
  • OSHA 30 and NFPA 70E (current)
  • Valid Level 2 completion and demonstrated field leadership experience
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools: multimeters, IV curve tracers, infrared cameras, power analyzers
  • Experience with SCADA monitoring platforms and remote troubleshooting
  • Ability to work at heights, climb ladders, and lift up to 75 lbs
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & CERTIFICATIONS

  • Journeyman Electrician License (or equivalent — required or actively in progress)
  • Forklift and Aerial Lift Certification
  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional or equivalent (preferred)
  • Commissioning or system startup experience (strongly preferred)
  • Experience with battery energy storage systems (BESS) and high-voltage components
  • Knowledge of utility interconnection requirements and electrical permitting
  • Thermography certification (Level I or II)

PATH TO PROMOTION — LEVEL 3 → NEXT LEVEL

  • Independently leads and resolves high-complexity field scenarios across multiple platforms
  • Develops root cause analysis reports and may write standard operating procedures
  • Consistently elevates the technical performance of the crew
  • Understands and interprets contractual and permit requirements
  • Demonstrates readiness for senior-level crew leadership and direct client communication
  • Recognized as a technical resource by peers and leadership across the organization

COMPENSATION & CAREER PATH

  • Level 1: $20–$25/hr
  • Level 2: $25–$30/hr
  • Level 3: $30–$35/hr ◀ Current Level
  • Level 4: $35–$45/hr
  • Level 5: $45–$65/hr+

WHY SERVIST ENERGY

  • Work at the technical frontier of renewable energy service — IV curve tracing, SCADA, BESS, and beyond
  • Lead crews on the most complex, high-profile projects in the company
  • Performance-based path to Level 4 — with direct impact on your advancement timeline
  • Full certification reimbursement including Journeyman licensure support, NABCEP PVIP, and thermography
  • Quarterly bonuses and profit-sharing tied to your performance metrics
  • A team that invests in your continued expertise, not just your output
