Job description

Staff DevOps Engineer

Job Number: 840

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people’s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We’ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we’re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren’t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Staff DevOps Engineer, you will provide technical leadership in designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, scalable cloud infrastructure supporting mission-critical federal digital services. You will partner closely with software engineers, architects, security engineers, and program leadership to automate software delivery, improve system reliability, and drive operational excellence through modern DevSecOps practices.

You will lead infrastructure automation initiatives, support cloud-native application delivery, and help establish engineering best practices that improve the speed, quality, and security of software deployments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain secure, scalable cloud infrastructure supporting enterprise applications.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using modern automation frameworks.
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to support automated software delivery.
  • Partner with software engineering teams to improve deployment automation, system reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability solutions to proactively identify and resolve system issues.
  • Ensure cloud environments follow federal security, compliance, and DevSecOps best practices while supporting Authority to Operate (ATO) requirements.
  • Support cloud migration efforts, infrastructure modernization, and platform optimization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Security, Architecture, Product, and Engineering teams to design resilient, highly available systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex infrastructure and deployment issues across development, testing, and production environments.
  • Improve platform performance, scalability, disaster recovery, backup strategies, and operational resilience.
  • Mentor engineers on DevOps principles, automation, cloud technologies, and operational best practices.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, technical planning, production support, and engineering process improvements.
  • Support technical interviews, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives across engineering teams.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of professional DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Cloud Infrastructure, or Infrastructure Engineering experience (additional experience may substitute for education)
  • Strong experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using modern DevOps tools
  • Experience developing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, or similar automation frameworks
  • Experience administering AWS cloud environments and cloud-native infrastructure
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes (EKS), or other container orchestration platforms
  • Strong understanding of networking, virtualization, Linux and Windows server administration, storage, and infrastructure architecture
  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging, observability, and performance monitoring solutions
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps practices and secure software delivery pipelines
  • Experience supporting highly available production environments and incident response
  • Experience with Git-based version control and automated deployment workflows
  • Strong scripting and automation experience using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar languages
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Public Trust
  • Must have resided within the United States for at least three of the previous five years

Desired Skills

  • Experience supporting DHS, USCIS, or other Federal Civilian agencies
  • Experience administering Windows Server 2019 or later
  • Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database environments, including Oracle RAC
  • Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) or modern microservices architectures
  • Experience with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI, or similar CI/CD platforms
  • Experience implementing Kubernetes operators, Helm charts, or GitOps workflows
  • Experience supporting container security and Kubernetes security best practices
  • Familiarity with AWS services including EC2, ECS, EKS, RDS, IAM, CloudWatch, Lambda, Route 53, and VPC networking
  • Experience implementing monitoring solutions such as Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic, or CloudWatch
  • Experience supporting disaster recovery, backup strategies, and business continuity planning
  • Familiarity with NIST security controls, Authority to Operate (ATO) processes, and federal compliance requirements
  • Experience working within Agile and DevSecOps delivery environments
