Product Development Engineer

Practice

Michael Baker International's CTO Organization drives enterprise technology strategy, platform innovation, and next-generation product development across the company. The organization builds cloud-native, scalable, and AI-enabled platforms that serve internal and external stakeholders, with deep expertise spanning full-stack software engineering, data platforms, geospatial and IoT analytics, and modern cloud infrastructure. The CTO Organization partners with business units including GovTech to architect, develop, and operationalize strategic platforms such as LiveTwin-Michael Baker's branded digital twin solution-ensuring technical excellence, security, observability, and rapid time-to-market. Engineers in this organization own end-to-end product delivery, from architecture and design through production operations, with accountability for scalability, reliability, and user impact.

What We're Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Product Development Engineer to join the CTO Organization and lead full-stack product development for LiveTwin and related enterprise platforms. This is a remote-primary role with occasional office presence (approximately one day per month) and quarterly travel for cross-functional alignment, client engagement, and strategic planning sessions. You will report directly to the VP of Technology Products, and operate with full autonomy as a principal-level individual contributor, owning critical platform capabilities spanning frontend, backend, data pipelines, and AI-enabled features.

What You'll Do

  • Own end-to-end product development across the full technology stack, including React and Node.js frontend and backend services, PostgreSQL and distributed data stores, Databricks data pipelines, and AI/agentic systems.
  • Lead architectural decisions for scalable, cloud-native platform components, establishing clear service boundaries, API contracts, and deployment patterns that enable rapid feature velocity and operational reliability.
  • Design and implement event-driven microservices and data integration patterns, ensuring idempotency, resilience, and observability across asynchronous workflows and cross-platform data flows.
  • Build and optimize high-performance user interfaces using React, applying modern performance engineering techniques including code splitting, lazy loading, bundle optimization, and CDN strategies to achieve production-grade Core Web Vitals and user experience standards.
  • Architect and deploy data pipelines using Databricks medallion architecture, Unity Catalog, and asset-bundle deployment patterns, ensuring data quality, security, and accessibility for analytics and AI workloads.
  • Develop AI-enabled and agentic product features using semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and large language models, with attention to access control, evaluation frameworks, and production observability.
  • Establish and maintain production observability across distributed systems using APM, structured logging, and metrics collection; define SLIs/SLOs and drive incident response and reliability improvements.
  • Collaborate with product, design, and business stakeholders to translate market requirements and customer feedback into technical architecture and prioritized delivery roadmaps.
  • Champion best practices across the technology stack including CI/CD automation, infrastructure-as-code, security hardening, and code quality tooling; mentor and elevate engineering standards across teams.
  • Own the operational excellence of deployed systems, including capacity planning, cost optimization, security compliance, and disaster recovery readiness.

What You Need to Succeed

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline; or equivalent hands-on experience demonstrating mastery across multiple technology domains.
  • 10+ years of professional software development experience with demonstrated expertise in full-stack product delivery, including frontend (React or equivalent modern frameworks), backend services (Node.js, .NET, or similar), and data systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, with experience designing schemas, optimizing queries, and managing distributed data systems at scale.
  • Hands-on experience building and deploying event-driven microservices architectures using message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ, or similar) and cloud-native patterns.
  • Proven ability to architect and own large-scale systems end-to-end, with clear judgment on trade-offs between performance, scalability, maintainability, and time-to-market.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams, articulate technical decisions, and translate business needs into technical strategy.
  • Production experience with at least one of the following: Databricks, big data platforms, or advanced data pipelines; OR agentic AI systems, semantic search, or RAG implementations.

Preferred:

  • Experience building or scaling SaaS or PaaS products from early-stage through production maturity.
  • Expertise in .NET/C# backend development or microservices architecture.
  • Production experience with Azure cloud services, including AKS, Cosmos DB, Azure Data Factory, or Azure OpenAI.
  • Geospatial or location-intelligence platform development, including GIS APIs, spatial databases, or mapping libraries (ESRI, MapBox, Azure Maps, or similar).
  • Leadership experience establishing engineering standards, code review practices, or mentoring senior engineers.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development, prompt engineering, or evaluating LLM-generated code in production systems.
  • Security and compliance expertise relevant to government or enterprise SaaS environments.

Compensation

The approximate compensation range for this position is $150,000 to $175,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
