What does a remote JavaScript developer do?

A Remote JavaScript Developer is responsible for building and maintaining web applications and user interfaces using JavaScript, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. They often collaborate with other developers, designers, and project managers through online tools. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management are standout soft skills for remote work environments. These capabilities ensure efficient project delivery, smooth teamwork across distributed teams, and the ability to adapt quickly to evolving technical requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by remote JavaScript developers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote JavaScript developers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams across different time zones, maintaining clear communication, and staying aligned with project requirements. To manage these challenges, it’s important to leverage collaboration tools (like Slack, Jira, and GitHub), participate in regular virtual meetings, and establish clear documentation and coding standards. While Massachusetts' students rank first in the nation on many educational measures, the Executive Office of Education strives to strengthen the foundations of education reform, empower schools and educators, and develop pathways to college and careers so all students in the Commonwealth can succeed, regardless of their zip code.

The Education Secretariat is committed to equity and valuing the unique and diverse characteristics and experiences of every member of its workforce. We encourage an authentic workplace where colleagues show up as their full selves, where collaboration, innovation, and connections are key to realizing our mission that all children, youth, and families thrive socially, academically, and economically. We seek teammates who are committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive work environment, where everyone is valued and engaged. We encourage you to apply and identify your strengths in these areas.

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Drupal Full Stack Developer to join our team. This role emphasizes back-end and front-end Drupal development, with a strong focus on building scalable, secure, and high-performing web applications. You will be responsible for developing Drupal-based solutions, integrating systems and services, and ensuring accessibility and usability standards are met.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in Drupal architecture, theming, and module development, along with a solid understanding of modern web development practices and accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1.

You will work closely with agency stakeholders, IT developers, and project managers to translate business requirements into robust, maintainable technical solutions that support both user needs and organizational goals.

Position Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and technical teams to analyze requirements and design scalable Drupal solutions.
  • Develop and build Drupal 11 websites, including custom modules, content types, themes, and integrations.
  • Lead and execute content migration strategies, including bulk content transfer, taxonomy configuration, and metadata management.
  • Build and maintain responsive, standards-compliant front-end components using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Integrate third-party systems and services using RESTful APIs and web services.
  • Lead and execute content migration strategies, including data mapping, transformation, and validation.
  • Configure and manage Drupal site elements such as content types, views, menus, blocks, workflows, roles, and permissions.
  • Ensure compliance with WCAG 2.1 level A and AA accessibility standards across all implementations.
  • Optimize application performance, security, and scalability, including caching strategies and code optimization.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues across the full stack.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation and contribute to coding standards and best practices.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and knowledge transfer to team members on Drupal development and platform capabilities.
  • Stay current with Drupal core updates, contributed modules, and emerging web technologies.

Minimum Required Qualifications (Please add minimum education requirement here):
• Bachelor's degree or Certificate in Web Development, Computer Science, or related field

  • 6+ years of experience in full stack web development, with a strong focus on Drupal.
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience with Drupal including custom module development and theming.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in remote Linux environments using CLI and Docker is preferred.
  • Proficiency in PHP, Twig, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern development workflows.
  • Experience with Drupal APIs, configuration management, and deployment processes.
  • Strong understanding of WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards and implementation techniques.
  • Experience with content migration tools (e.g., Migrate API) and structured content modeling.
  • Familiarity with front-end frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap) and JavaScript frameworks/libraries (e.g., React, jQuery).
  • Experience integrating external systems via RESTful APIs and working with decoupled or headless Drupal architectures.
  • Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with Figma for interpreting UI requirements (not design ownership).
