What Does a Remote JavaScript Developer Do?

As a remote JavaScript developer, you work from home and code software or applications to meet the needs of your company. In this role, you may test software on the web, iterate software to incorporate feedback, and otherwise help meet the development requirements of your company. Like many programmers, most remote JavaScript programmers do not focus exclusively on this programming language—while it may receive the majority of your time, you may also be asked to program in other languages as needed. Remote JavaScript developers often use email, telephones, and virtual office software to communicate with other developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Javascript Developer, and why are they important?

A Remote Javascript Developer needs strong proficiency in core JavaScript, familiarity with frameworks like React or Node.js, and a solid understanding of web development principles, usually backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Experience with code versioning tools (such as Git), package managers (like npm or Yarn), and cloud collaboration platforms is typically essential. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear written communication skills help developers excel in distributed teams. These competencies enable the developer to deliver high-quality code efficiently while collaborating effectively in remote environments.

How do remote JavaScript developers typically collaborate with team members and manage code integration?

Remote JavaScript developers commonly use tools like Git, Slack, and project management platforms (such as Jira or Trello) to collaborate with team members. Regular video meetings and code reviews help ensure alignment on project goals and maintain code quality. Developers frequently participate in agile sprints, contributing to both front-end and back-end tasks, and often pair with colleagues in different time zones to solve problems. Clear documentation and consistent communication are key to managing code integration and fostering an effective remote workflow.

As a Software Quality Assurance Manager at RF-SMART you will lead the quality engineering efforts that build the future of RF-SMART products focused on supply chain in multiple industries across mobile, web and server components while working with a great team. We're looking for someone who can help our team grow confidently by evaluating and identifying demands of future roadmap and product delivery needs against resources, capacity and velocity of the QA team, as well as facilitate career growth for direct reports to help meet that demand and foster professional development.

You will own the quality software development process and contribute directly to the culture of quality within RF-SMART through process improvements, departmental outreach, and mentoring. As part of our growth, you will take on, hire, and directly manage a cross-functional team of QA engineers focused on product, web, desktop, mobile, server, and integration testing across manual and automated testing suites. You will also help secure cross-department resources, manage trade-offs for delivery, keep stakeholders accountable, meet deadlines, communicate at the executive level on project status and risk, and measure team impact and needs.

This team is a hybrid team with both in-office and fully remote, full-time team members potentially around the world. This position will report to the Director of QA - Product Engineering.

What You'll Do:

  • Hire and develop our team of QA Engineers across industries and disciplines.
  • Set and report on measurable goals and objectives for the team.
  • Set weekly and monthly priorities for the QA team and individual team members.
  • With feedback from the team, leadership, and external stakeholders, own the quality process, procedures and decision support for product testing and automation.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement tools to help facilitate team success.
  • Provide a point of authoritative knowledge to help address technical or administrative hurdles the team may encounter.
  • Facilitate and encourage collaboration through team meetings or other communication channels as necessary, as well as conduct team building activities.
  • Report on team progress, status, and roadblocks to management from the quality assurance lens.
  • Advocate for and on behalf of the QA team and the construction and delivery of RF-SMART's product, processes, and organization.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports to work on issues, provide and receive feedback and discuss individual professional development goals and opportunities.
  • Perform annual or semi-annual performance reviews when required.
  • Actively participate in backlog grooming, planning, and delivery activities.
  • Define and track software quality metrics.
  • Identify gaps in the quality assurance and testing processes, generate solutions, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Support the long-term career development of your direct reports; helping them build their skills in software testing and automation.

What You Bring:

  • Leadership skills:
    • Ability to inspire and provide direction aligned with company and departmental vision.
    • Experience building and growing successful teams.
    • Management or team lead experience from a previous technical position.
    • Propensity towards leadership and mentoring.
    • You are a solid operator – you know how to "trim the fat" and get to what matters to deliver results.
  • Interpersonal skills:
    • Ability to form good relationships with other leaders in the company.
    • A strong sense of empathy and the ability to advocate for others.
    • Collaborative and adaptable mindset.
    • Openness and authenticity combined with excellent communication skills.
  • Analytical skills:
    • Strength in evaluating the success of RF-SMART in reaching its goals and ensuring each strategic goal is measurable.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills – you might not know all the answers, but you know how to find and communicate the solution.
    • Excitement and enthusiasm for helping customers solve supply chain challenges through high-quality software.
    • Zeal for learning and desire to develop your, your peers', and your team's skills.
    • Hands-on software testing experience, including integration, regression, and load/performance testing.
