Remote Java Developer Startup information

What is a remote Java developer at a startup?

A Remote Java Developer at a startup is a software engineer who specializes in using the Java programming language to build and maintain applications, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. In a startup setting, these developers often work on a wide range of tasks, from backend development to integrating new technologies, due to the fast-paced and dynamic nature of startups. Remote Java Developers collaborate with team members through online tools and are expected to be self-motivated, flexible, and able to handle multiple responsibilities. Their work is crucial for building scalable, efficient, and innovative software solutions that help startups grow and compete in the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Java developer at a startup?

To thrive as a Remote Java Developer at a startup, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, software development principles, and experience with frameworks like Spring, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools (like Maven or Gradle), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These skills enable you to deliver robust, scalable solutions efficiently while collaborating seamlessly with distributed teams under tight startup timelines.

How does a remote Java developer at a startup typically collaborate with cross-functional teams?

As a remote Java developer at a startup, you can expect to work closely with product managers, designers, and other developers through digital collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and GitHub. Regular stand-up meetings and sprint planning sessions are common to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines. Since startups often have smaller, agile teams, your input may also influence product decisions, and you might be involved in multiple project phases from ideation to deployment. Clear communication and proactive participation are essential for effective teamwork in this remote, fast-paced environment.

Job description

Overview:

If you're looking for the stability of a profitable, growing company with the entrepreneurial spirit of a startup, we're hiring. SageSure, a leader in catastrophe-exposed property insurance, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Policy Onboarding and Home Services team. As a vital member of this team, you will own and evolve the backend services that power the post-bind policyholder journey - from account onboarding to inspection orchestration, hazard remediation, underwriting review, and proactive home-service offers. Your work directly impacts how policyholders experience SageSure after they purchase a policy, ensuring a seamless, reliable, and modern experience. You'll contribute to architectural decisions, bringing product requirements and business context into the conversation.

We operate a microservices-based SaaS platform on AWS and conduct a significant share of our business through APIs. If you have a passion for backend technologies, API design, and building resilient distributed systems and you want to see the real-world impact of your work - this is the role for you.

What you’d be doing:

  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to craft innovative capabilities in our API products, enabling the building blocks of new customer experiences.
  • Design and implement modern Java services that connect our platform to integration partners, powering dynamic and user-friendly experiences.
  • Make high-level technical and architectural decisions to ensure our solutions are secure, reliable, and scalable as we grow.
  • Own features end-to-end from technical design and implementation through testing, deployment, and production monitoring.
  • Make well-reasoned design decisions and tradeoffs in your domain, authoring technical design documents, API documentation, and architectural proposals.
  • Develop testing suites and validation strategies including integration tests, to deliver complex outcomes while maintaining high software quality.
  • Mentor other engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and design discussions to foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Expand and evolve our integration strategy, connecting third-party contractor networks, service providers, and our internal underwriting systems.

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying software applications.
  • Strong experience with Java and modern Java tooling for backend development.
  • A proven track record of designing scalable, secure APIs and integration solutions.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding engineering teams.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across teams.
  • A proactive, curious mindset with a passion for building technology that makes a tangible difference.

Highly preferred candidates also have:

  • Experience working in Insurtech or Fintech environments.
  • Experience with Temporal workflow orchestration.

Software at SageSure:

Originally founded as a software and analytics business, SageSure's proprietary technology has always been a key source of competitive advantage. We offer agents and policyholders best-in-class, modern capabilities to quote and bind insurance, service policies, and submit and track claims. We operate a microservices-based SaaS platform and conduct a substantial share of our business through our API. Our software product, engineering, and operations teams set the bar for talent in our industry. We work remotely from numerous states across the country and are always looking for exceptional individuals to join us.

We are continually innovating with modern tools and technologies, and we welcome new perspectives. An ideal candidate will have a passion for some of our key technologies and advocate pragmatic industry practices around availability, scalability, security, and automation. A cloud-based infrastructure, continuous integration and delivery, and a quality-first approach help us to better deliver software. A metrics-driven mindset has become part of our DNA and helps us make data-driven decisions. If you have interests across these domains, we want to help grow and foster them.
