What is a Remote Java Developer at a startup?

A Remote Java Developer at a startup is a software engineer who specializes in using the Java programming language to build and maintain applications, while working from a location outside the traditional office environment. In a startup setting, these developers often work on a wide range of tasks, from backend development to integrating new technologies, due to the fast-paced and dynamic nature of startups. Remote Java Developers collaborate with team members through online tools and are expected to be self-motivated, flexible, and able to handle multiple responsibilities. Their work is crucial for building scalable, efficient, and innovative software solutions that help startups grow and compete in the market.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Java Developer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Java Developer at a startup, you need strong proficiency in Java programming, software development principles, and experience with frameworks like Spring, along with a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), build tools (like Maven or Gradle), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These skills enable you to deliver robust, scalable solutions efficiently while collaborating seamlessly with distributed teams under tight startup timelines.

Clear communication and proactive participation are essential for effective teamwork in this remote, fast-paced environment.

What if your work could help preserve Indigenous languages, strengthen multilingual learning, improve digital wellbeing, and create meaningful educational experiences for future generations?

In this role, you'll transform innovative ideas into real-world outcomes - leading projects that bridge research, content development, partnerships, grants, and product innovation.

This is a unique opportunity for a highly organized, mission-driven professional who enjoys both strategic thinking and hands-on execution. You'll collaborate with researchers, educators, community leaders, engineers, and organizational leadership to manage complex initiatives, build meaningful partnerships, generate evidence of impact, and help bring groundbreaking educational solutions to life.

Best-in-Class Benefits and Culture:

  • Financial security: Life and disability insurance for added protection
  • Flexible financial options: Health savings and flexible spending accounts offered
  • Well-being and work-life balance: Paid time off, flexible schedule, and remote work choices provided

Plus, our client works to maintain the best environment for our employees, where people can learn and grow with the company. We strive to provide a collaborative, creative environment where everyone feels encouraged to contribute to our processes, decisions, planning, and culture.

To thrive/succeed as the Multilingual Learning Programs Lead, you should have:

  • Experience in project management, preferably in education, edtech, research, curriculum development, publishing, nonprofit, public-sector, or startup environments.
  • Background in early childhood education, bilingual/multilingual education, linguistics, curriculum design, education research, or a related field.
  • Strong written communication skills with experience developing grant proposals, reports, educational content, partner-facing materials, research summaries, or thought leadership pieces.
  • Experience supporting research, program evaluation, data collection, assessment, analysis, and grant-funded initiatives, with the ability to translate findings into actionable recommendations and deliverables.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholder relationships simultaneously, including collaboration with educators, schools, community organizations, researchers, cultural institutions, and cross-functional teams.
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and collaborative professional with experience working in fast-paced environments, leveraging AI tools and technology to support innovation, program implementation, and continuous improvement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with grant writing and administration, particularly NIH, NSF, IES, foundation, education, healthcare, or public-sector funding opportunities.
  • Knowledge of multilingual education, Indigenous language revitalization, culturally responsive pedagogy, heritage language learning, or translanguaging practices.
  • Experience developing curriculum, educational resources, assessments, children's content, or educator-facing materials.
  • Background in digital wellbeing, social-emotional learning, family engagement, children's media, or health and wellness education.
  • Startup, edtech, nonprofit, research center, school district, museum, library, or educational publishing experience, with exposure to pilot programs, implementation studies, or early adopter initiatives.

Your responsibilities as the Multilingual Learning Programs Lead will include:

  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional projects across research, curriculum development, partnerships, grants, and product initiatives by managing timelines, deliverables, stakeholder communications, and implementation plans to ensure successful execution.
  • Support research and evaluation efforts by assisting with study design, data collection, analysis, reporting, grant development, and evidence-generation activities that demonstrate program impact and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Develop and manage high-quality educational content, curriculum materials, learner resources, and engagement tools that support multilingual education, language revitalization, digital wellbeing, and culturally responsive learning initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with schools, community organizations, museums, libraries, educators, researchers, and implementation partners while supporting onboarding, pilot programs, feedback collection, and long-term collaboration.
  • Create thought leadership and market development materials-including articles, case studies, research summaries, presentations, grant content, and partner communications-to strengthen organizational visibility, drive adoption, and showcase impact across diverse audiences.

If you're energized by purpose-driven work, passionate about learning and innovation, and excited by the challenge of turning vision into action, we'd love to meet you.
