What does a remote Java developer intern do?

As a Remote Java Developer Intern, your typical day may start with a virtual stand-up meeting to discuss progress, tasks, and any blockers with your team. You'll spend most of your time developing or maintaining Java code, participating in code reviews, and integrating feedback from other team members. Regular communication with your mentor or supervisor is common, and you may also be involved in virtual training sessions, collaborative projects, and bug-fixing tasks. What You Will Do:

  • Work closely with business and customer stakeholders to define clear product objectives and technical requirements.
  • Engage in the full lifecycle of professional services projects, including reviewing statements of work to provide feedback on resourcing, schedules, and budgets.
  • Establish and maintain relevant customer-facing project management frameworks, such as Waterfall, Scrum, or Kanban, potentially interfacing with existing client tools.
  • Develop, maintain, and distribute standard project management deliverables including implementation plans, project schedules, budget variances, and risk assessments.
  • Plan and facilitate daily stand-ups, weekly status meetings, and other Scrum ceremonies as required to ensure continuous stakeholder communication.
  • Closely manage project budgets and resource utilization.
  • Coordinate with internal team leaders, phase managers, and external subcontractors to identify, address, and resolve project issues impacting quality or client goals.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for additional services, including new statements of work, change requests, and support agreements.
  • Successfully manage multiple simultaneous projects, ensuring timely delivery and quality across all workstreams.

What You Will Bring:

  • 5-7+ years of experience in a Technical Program or Project Management role, preferably within a professional services or cloud technology environment.
  • Deep understanding of managing projects using Agile software development methodologies (e.g., Scrum, Kanban) in a fast-paced, often remote environment.
  • Strong business acumen with proven experience managing large projects and budgets. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical staff and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with collaboration and task management tools such as Jira, Slack, Monday.com, and Google Workspace.
  • BS Degree in Project Management, Computer Science, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional Project Management certification (e.g., PMI-PMP) or a Scrum Master Certification.
  • Prior experience in a software engineering role or other related technical discipline.
  • Experience leading projects involving major public cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Technical savvy with the ability to learn new technologies quickly and the ability to read or write code in languages such as Java, C#, JavaScript, or Python.
