What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote IoT Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote IoT Engineer, you need strong expertise in embedded systems, networking protocols, programming (such as C/C++ or Python), and a relevant degree in computer science, electronics, or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS IoT or Azure IoT), IoT-specific frameworks, and relevant certifications (such as Cisco IoT or CompTIA IoT+) are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are vital soft skills for success in distributed teams. These skills are important to ensure secure device connectivity, scalable IoT solutions, and effective collaboration across remote and cross-functional environments.

How does a Remote IoT Engineer effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams despite working from a distance?

As a Remote IoT Engineer, collaboration with hardware, software, and data teams is crucial to ensure seamless device integration and system performance. Most teams use digital communication tools such as Slack, Jira, and GitHub to coordinate tasks, share updates, and troubleshoot issues together. Regular virtual meetings, clear documentation, and proactive communication help bridge the distance and maintain alignment across projects. Emphasizing transparency and responsiveness ensures that remote engineers remain integral, valued contributors to the team’s success.

What are Remote IoT Engineers?

Remote IoT Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems while working from a remote location, rather than onsite. They are responsible for connecting hardware devices to networks, implementing software solutions, and ensuring secure data exchange between devices. Their work often involves programming, troubleshooting, and collaborating with teams using digital communication tools. Remote IoT Engineers enable organizations to build and manage connected devices efficiently without requiring physical presence at a specific site.

Mashura is building modern software and connected device solutions that support medical dispensing workflows across veterinary and dental practices. Our platform spans cloud services, APIs, modern web applications, and IoT-connected systems deployed globally.

About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help shape and scale our modern data platform built on Microsoft Fabric.
We have established the foundation of a lakehouse architecture, ingesting device and SaaS application data from thousands of medical dispensing cabinets deployed globally. The next phase is expanding and hardening this platform to support:
  • Product intelligence and AI-driven insights
  • Customer-facing analytics and reporting
  • Internal operational efficiency and automation
  • Scalable, trustworthy enterprise data models
This role is both strategic and hands-on. You will design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines and semantic models while helping define the future of our analytics and AI capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and build scalable data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric and PySpark
  • Design and evolve our lakehouse architecture
  • Develop robust semantic models and analytics-ready datasets
  • Implement data quality validation, monitoring, and observability practices
  • Optimize performance and cost efficiency across Fabric workloads
  • Collaborate with backend engineers to define event schemas and data contracts
  • Enable product intelligence initiatives, including AI/ML experimentation
  • Contribute to data governance and security best practices
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of professional experience in data engineering or analytics engineering
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric (lakehouse, pipelines, notebooks, semantic models)
  • Strong experience with PySpark and distributed data processing
  • Deep understanding of modern data architectures (lakehouse, medallion patterns)
  • Experience designing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines
  • Strong SQL skills and data modeling expertise
  • Experience working with event-driven or streaming data systems
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills
  • Comfortable working cross-functionally with engineering, product, and business teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with IoT or device-generated data
  • Experience integrating operational systems (SaaS platforms, APIs) into analytics environments
  • Familiarity with Azure services (Event Hubs, Cosmos DB, Azure SQL)
  • Exposure to AI/ML workflows and feature engineering
  • Experience implementing data governance and lineage tooling
