Job description

Job Title: Chief of Staff
Location: Remote

Description
Founded in 2004, BME Strategies is a Massachusetts-based consulting firm specializing in the design, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs for local, regional, and state government partners. Our work supports evidence-based, community-driven solutions that strengthen public health systems and advance equity across the communities we serve. At BME, our clients are on the front lines of Public Health. Priorities may shift but our commitment to supporting our partners does not. We take pride in having multi-year, multi-project engagements, often working closely as an extension of their staff. Our success comes from our shared values: a bias toward action; optimistically collaborative; willingness to navigate ambiguity; minimal ego - no job is too small or big; pursuing the equitable solution; always learning, and; committed to quality at every stage.
Position Overview
BME Strategies is seeking an operationally rigorous, highly collaborative, and deeply strategic Chief of Staff (CoS) to serve as a peer to our executive leadership team and report directly to the EVP / Managing Director. In this critical VP-level role, you will lead the execution of firm-wide priorities, drive key cross-functional strategic initiatives, manage capacity planning, and maximize overall leadership team effectiveness. The Chief of Staff operates as BME's central operational orchestrator, establishing a tight integration bridge between our delivery practices (led by our VP of Public Health), our commercial pipeline (led by our VP of Business Development), and our core business infrastructure (led by our VP of Finance & Operations). The CoS serves as direct supervisor to senior staff members with significant, high-visibility bodies of work, providing performance management, workload oversight, and professional development guidance. This role ensures that as BME scales, our operational decisions and resources remain optimized to advance health equity.
Key Responsibilities
  • BME Org-Wide Responsibilities for Executive and VP-Level Roles:
    • Serves as strategic and technical advisor across firm-wide operations.
    • Manages organizational stewardship, strategic operational initiatives, and provides operational service leadership.
    • Supervises internal leadership team functions and administrative assignments.
    • Establishes and remains accountable to operational growth targets and performance metrics.
    • Participates in the review and strategic alignment of proposals prior to submission.
    • Supports leadership and management in proposal, partnership, and pitch strategy.
  • Role-Specific Responsibilities:
    • Strategic Initiatives & Executive Partnership
      • Partner with the Managing Director (MD) to operationalize BME's corporate roadmaps and translate high-level strategy into actionable team objectives and KPIs.
      • Coordinate and facilitate weekly Leadership Team meetings, quarterly strategic retreats, and annual reviews of projects and overall organizational performance; manage executive agendas, compile action items, and drive accountability across VPs.
      • Serve as a trusted sounding board and strategic advisor to the MD and CEO, leading and providing oversight of special executive-led projects and handling sensitive organizational development tasks.
      • Conducts research and analysis on strategic, operational, or market questions as directed by the MD/CEO, synthesizing findings into actionable recommendations.
      • Serves as a designated representative for VP-level leaders in internal or external settings when they are unavailable, ensuring continuity of departmental representation on cross-functional and client-facing matters.
    • Cross-Functional Coordination & Synchronization
      • Develops and maintains deep working knowledge of BME's service offerings, methodologies, and client engagement models to inform strategic and operational decision-making.
      • Act as the central 'operational bridge' across BME's core functional areas: Public Health Delivery, Business Development, and Finance & Operations.
      • Partner with VP, Finance & Operations to align resource planning, contract budgets, and recruiting plans with active business development pipelines and upcoming client demands.
      • Develop, implement, and monitor a unified corporate dashboard integrating sales pipeline, programmatic delivery, and consultant capacity metrics to ensure overall firm health.
    • Proposal Pipeline & Capacity Orchestration
      • In coordination with the VP of Business Development, manage the operational workflow of active RFP and grant responses, ensuring timely submission and administrative compliance.
      • Builds and maintains relationships with prospective clients and strategic partners, participating in key early-stage business development conversations alongside the VP of Business Development.
      • Monitor team capacity, scheduling proposal workflows and assigning technical resources to upcoming bids without over-burdening delivery staff.
      • Establish structured operational workflows and project handoffs, ensuring that newly won contracts transition smoothly from the BD pipeline to programmatic delivery teams.
    • Internal Communications & Culture Leadership
      • Lead internal communication strategies for BME's remote-first team, drafting high-impact corporate announcements and maintaining team alignment and engagement.
      • In partnership with the Sr. Manager of People and Culture, champion BME's shared values, mentoring junior staff, and designing internal professional development paths to foster a supportive, minimal-ego working culture.
      • Partner with HR (reporting to VP, Finance & Operations) to ensure internal career growth frameworks are equitable, clear, and aligned with BME's core mission.
Experience, Qualification, & Skills
  • Master's degree in Public Health (MPH), Public Administration (MPA), Business Administration (MBA), or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 15 years of professional experience, with at least 8 years in a senior operational leadership role (e.g., Chief of Staff, VP of Operations, Operations Director, Management Consulting, or equivalent executive-level operational role).
  • Minimum of 10 years of day-to-day people management experience, with a proven track record of coordinating remote, cross-functional teams and managing diverse stakeholders.
  • Deep understanding of professional services consulting business models, ideally within government contracting at the federal, state, local, or regional level.
  • Exceptional project management, organization, and organizational development skills, with a proven track record of balancing complex, long-term strategic initiatives with day-to-day operational duties.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to write high-impact internal communications, business proposals, and strategic briefs.
  • A collaborative and supportive working style, minimal ego, and a passion for advancing health equity in state and local public health systems.
  • Full alignment with BME's shared values and remote-first culture.
Work Environment
  • This is a full-time position based in a home office environment within the U.S.
  • BME Strategies in a remote-first organization. Occasional travel to leadership retreats, conferences, or key client sites is anticipated (approximately 10-15% travel).

Compensation & Benefits
  • BME Strategies offers a competitive compensation package that includes:
    • 6+ weeks total leave, including paid vacation, sick time, personal leave, and floating holidays;
    • Health, dental, and vision insurance, with 80% employer-paid coverage for the employee & 70% employer-paid coverage for dependents;
    • Health FSA and dependent care FSA;
    • 401(k) with employer match;
    • Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance;
    • One-time technology stipend;

  • The salary range for this position is $165,000 - $195,000 per year, with an annual bonus opportunity, dependent upon individual and firm performance.

Please note: This range reflects alignment with the VP tier and maintaining equity with current senior leadership roles.
