What is a remote internal project manager?

A Remote Internal Project Manager is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing projects within an organization while working remotely. They coordinate tasks, manage resources, set deadlines, and ensure projects are completed according to internal goals and standards. Unlike external project managers who may work with clients or third parties, internal project managers focus on projects that serve the organization's own needs. Their role often involves virtual communication, collaboration with various departments, and use of online project management tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote internal project manager?

To thrive as a Remote Internal Project Manager, you need strong organizational, leadership, and project management skills, typically supported by a bachelor’s degree and experience in project coordination. Familiarity with project management software like Asana, Trello, or Microsoft Project, and certifications such as PMP or Agile/Scrum are commonly required. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and time management abilities are essential soft skills for managing remote teams and driving projects forward. These skills ensure projects are completed efficiently, stakeholders stay aligned, and remote collaboration remains productive despite physical distance.

How does a remote internal project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure project success?

As a Remote Internal Project Manager, effective collaboration with cross-functional teams is essential for project success. This usually involves using digital communication and project management tools to facilitate regular updates, clarify project goals, assign tasks, and track progress. Virtual meetings, shared documents, and collaborative platforms help bridge the distance, allowing you to quickly address issues, gather feedback, and adapt to changes. Building strong relationships remotely requires proactive communication, clear documentation, and an emphasis on transparency to keep everyone aligned and motivated.

Job description

See the whole picture. Keep complex work moving.

At Tangent Design Engineering, we bring bold ideas to life. Our team thrives on solving complex problems with elegant engineering, from robotics and energy systems to advanced communications. We are collaborative, curious, and relentless about quality.

We are looking for a Project Manager who can bring structure, visibility, and calm momentum to multidisciplinary engineering projects. This role is central to how we keep clients informed, teams aligned, and projects moving in the right direction.

You do not need to be the technical expert in the room. That is what our engineers and Technical Project Managers are here for. Your job is to understand the full project picture, communicate the real state of the work, flag risks early, and make sure important details do not quietly fall through the cracks.

This role will also support Tangent's inside sales activities by helping coordinate opportunities, proposals, follow-up, project handoffs, and the information needed to move prospective work forward.

What You'll Do

  • Lead multiple engineering projects in alignment with Tangent's proposals and project delivery expectations.
  • Maintain accurate project schedules, budgets, status updates, documentation, and tracking tools so project health is clear and visible.
  • Serve as the primary client contact for project status, schedule, scope updates, budget communication, and overall project coordination.
  • Partner with Technical Project Managers, engineers, Client Relationship Managers, and internal leaders to keep work aligned and moving.
  • Identify early signs of scope, schedule, budget, resource, or delivery risk and communicate them before they become bigger problems.
  • Support project change orders, invoicing accuracy, project closeouts, and lessons learned.
  • Lead internal project meetings, track action items, and make sure follow-through actually happens.
  • Support inside sales activities, including opportunity tracking, proposal coordination, client follow-up, gathering project information, and helping move prospective work through the sales process.
  • Help create a clean handoff from sales into project delivery so commitments, assumptions, timelines, and client expectations are understood.
  • Contribute to improvements in Tangent's project management, proposal, sales coordination, and client communication processes.

What We Expect to See on Your Resume

  • Project Management Experience: Experience managing engineering, manufacturing, product development, or technical projects with multiple moving pieces.
  • Project Control: Evidence that you have maintained ownership of scope, schedule, budget, risks, actions, and project documentation.
  • Client Communication: Experience communicating directly with clients about project realities, timelines, changes, and risks.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination: A track record of working with technical teams, operations, finance, leadership, sales, or external stakeholders to keep projects aligned.
  • Financial and Schedule Visibility: Experience tracking project budgets, forecasts, timelines, change orders, or invoicing inputs.
  • Structured Project Delivery: Familiarity with project management tools, documentation practices, and structured delivery environments.
  • Sales or Proposal Support: Experience supporting proposals, opportunity tracking, client follow-up, sales administration, estimating coordination, or project handoffs would be an asset.

What We Will Test for in the Interview

  • Communication: Can you explain the real state of a project clearly, calmly, and without burying the useful information?
  • Accountability: Do you follow through, close loops, flag concerns early, and take ownership without needing to be chased?
  • Judgment: Can you tell the difference between a normal project bump, a real risk, and something that needs escalation?
  • Client Confidence: Can you build trust with clients by being transparent, prepared, and steady, especially when timelines, budgets, or scope start to shift?
  • Team Alignment: Can you work with technical teams without trying to overstep, while still making sure decisions, actions, and risks are visible?
  • Commercial Awareness: Can you support proposals and client opportunities while keeping commitments realistic, details organized, and handoffs clean?
  • Sales Follow-Through: Can you keep opportunities moving, coordinate input from busy people, and make sure prospective clients do not disappear into a black hole?

Why Work With Tangent

Salary:$80,000 to $105,000
Hours:Full-time, 40 hours per week, with work-from-home flexibility
Paid Time Off:Four weeks, to be used in any way you want
