What does a remote interior design consultant do?

A Remote Interior Design Consultant provides professional interior design advice and services to clients virtually, using online communication tools such as video calls, emails, and design platforms. They help clients plan, decorate, and optimize spaces without visiting the physical location, often creating mood boards, floor plans, and shopping lists digitally. This role allows clients to access expert design guidance from anywhere, making the process more flexible and convenient.

How do remote interior design consultants typically collaborate with clients and team members despite working from different locations?

Remote Interior Design Consultants use a variety of digital tools and platforms to communicate effectively with clients and colleagues. Video calls, virtual design boards, and collaborative project management software are commonly used to share ideas, present concepts, and gather feedback. Regular check-ins and clear documentation help ensure everyone stays aligned on project goals and timelines. Building strong relationships remotely requires proactive communication and flexibility, but it also allows for greater work-life balance and the opportunity to work with diverse clients and teams from different regions.

Job description

Description

Let's Do great things-Together

At Shive-Hattery, we believe great design starts with great people. We're a full-service architecture and engineering firm with a legacy of collaboration, innovation, and putting people first, our clients and each other. If you're looking for a place where your ideas matter and your growth is supported, you'll feel at home here.

Why This Role Matters

As an Architect in the Healthcare market with 10+ years of experience you'll play a key role in supporting the firm and shaping projects that make a difference-from concept through completion. You'll collaborate with talented teammates, contribute your expertise, and help us deliver thoughtful, high-quality solutions for those we serve.

What You'll Doย

  • Lead and contribute to all phases of healthcare projects, including programming, planning, design development, construction documentation, and construction administrationย
  • Serve as a client-facing leader, participating in and often leading user group meetings, stakeholder workshops, and design presentationsย
  • Translate clinical and operational needs into clear, functional, and buildable architectural solutions
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines and external consultants to ensure seamless integration of architecture, engineering, and interior design
  • Apply strong knowledge of healthcare regulations and codes (FGI Guidelines, IBC, accessibility standards) to support compliant, safe, and efficient facilitiesย
  • Lead or support Quality Assurance and Quality Control reviews to maintain high standards of accuracy, constructability, and design intentย
  • Mentor and support less-experienced staff, contributing to a culture of learning and continuous improvementย
  • Contribute to proposal development, interviews, and client pursuits as part of growing Shive-Hattery's healthcare practice ย ย
  • Assisting with project management to develop the project plan, structure the team and assignments, and ensure deliverablesย ย
  • Opportunity to work on high-impact healthcare projects across Iowa and the Midwest, including community hospitals, academic medical centers, and specialty care facilities
  • Strong emphasis on developing client relationships and long-term partnerships
  • A collaborative culture that values professional growth, leadership development, and work-life integration
  • The ability to influence how healthcare architecture is practiced within the firm and regionย

Requirements

You don't need to check every box to succeed here. If your experience aligns with many of the items below and you're excited about the work we do, we encourage you to apply.

  • B.Arch., M.Arch, Interior Design or equivalent degree
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience, with demonstrated experience in healthcare planning and design (acute care, outpatient, or specialty facilities)ย
  • Licensure is requiredย
  • Advanced professional accreditation preferred (ie: EDAC, WELL AP, CHID, ACHA)
  • Strong understanding of healthcare codes, regulations, and operational workflowsย

What will make you stand outย

  • Familiarity with Revit, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office and healthcare documentation standardsย
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage clinicians, administrators, and project teams
  • Interest in mentoring, leadership, and advancing the quality of healthcare design

Our Commitment to You

That's why our benefits support your health, financial stability, and life beyond work - including medical, dental and vision coverage, paid time off and holidays, 401(k) retirement savings, disability protection, wellness incentives, and flexibility. When we succeed, you share in that success. Guided by truth, trust, mentoring, and care, we're committed to helping you build a lasting career.
