Both roles often work remotely and require similar estimating skills, but their scope and industry focus differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Insulation Estimators, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Insulation Estimators often face challenges related to limited access to job sites, which can make it difficult to gather precise measurements and assess site-specific factors. To overcome this, they rely heavily on detailed project documentation, photos, and virtual meetings with on-site personnel. Effective communication and strong organizational skills are essential for collaborating with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify project requirements. Utilizing advanced estimation software and digital tools can also streamline the process and reduce errors, ensuring accurate and competitive bids.

What is a Remote Insulation Estimator?

A Remote Insulation Estimator is a professional who assesses project plans, blueprints, and specifications to calculate the materials, labor, and costs required for insulation work, all while working remotely. They use specialized software and digital tools to prepare accurate bids and proposals for residential, commercial, or industrial insulation projects. These estimators communicate with contractors, clients, and suppliers primarily through email, phone, or video conferencing, allowing them to perform their duties without being physically present at job sites. Their work is crucial in ensuring that projects are completed within budget and meet energy efficiency requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Insulation Estimator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Insulation Estimator, you need strong mathematical skills, a background in construction or insulation, and experience interpreting blueprints or technical drawings. Familiarity with estimating software like PlanSwift, Bluebeam, or On-Screen Takeoff, as well as proficiency in Excel, is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, effective communication, and time management are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These abilities ensure accurate project estimates, clear collaboration with teams and clients, and efficient delivery of bids in a competitive market.

Job description

About Summit Sealants

Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Montrose, Colorado, Summit Sealants has grown into one of the largest and most respected specialty contracting and restoration companies in the United States. With multiple offices and a broad national footprint, we serve clients across commercial, healthcare, industrial and energy, infrastructure, and institutional markets. Our capabilities span waterproofing, concrete repair, sealants, insulation, stone, access solutions, and commercial roofing โ€” making Summit Sealants a true full-service restoration partner. As we continue to grow our roofing division, we are looking for motivated professionals who want to build a long-term career within a company that rewards versatility and ambition.

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Commercial Roofing Estimator to join our team in a fully remote capacity. In this role, you will develop accurate and competitive bids for commercial roofing projects while working closely with project managers, clients, and suppliers to ensure seamless execution from proposal through award. As Summit Sealants expands, high-performing estimators will have the opportunity to cross-train and grow their scope across our other specialty contracting divisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare accurate, competitive bids and proposals for commercial roofing projects including TPO, BUR, metal, and coating systems
  • Conduct detailed material and labor takeoffs from project plans, specifications, and site measurements
  • Review project drawings, specifications, and scope documents to develop comprehensive scopes of work
  • Solicit and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive cost inputs
  • Identify and communicate scope gaps, exclusions, and clarifications to project stakeholders
  • Coordinate with project managers and the sales team to align estimates with project goals and client expectations
  • Track and maintain bid logs, estimate files, and historical cost data for future reference
  • Prepare and issue change order estimates as project scopes evolve
  • Attend virtual pre-bid meetings, site walkthroughs (when required), and client calls
  • Support business development efforts by providing timely, well-organized proposals
  • Cross-train on estimating workflows across other Summit Sealants divisions (waterproofing, concrete repair, sealants, insulation, and more) as opportunities arise, expanding your scope and earning potential

Qualifications & Requirements

  • 2โ€“5 years of commercial roofing estimating experience (TPO, BUR, metal, coatings preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Proficiency with takeoff and estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, PlanSwift, or similar)
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word for bid preparation and reporting
  • Solid understanding of commercial roofing materials, labor costs, and market pricing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for client-facing proposals and internal coordination
  • Highly organized and self-motivated โ€” able to manage multiple bids simultaneously in a remote environment
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and general construction practices

Preferred (Not Required)

  • Experience with Google Earth or aerial measurement tools for remote site assessments
  • Background in field roofing, waterproofing, or specialty restoration contracting is a plus
  • Familiarity with building codes and energy compliance requirements for commercial roofs
  • Exposure to estimating across multiple construction trades or service divisions
  • Prior experience working in a remote or distributed team environment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $85,000 + (depending on experience)
  • Performance-based bonuses and incentives
  • Vehicle allowance (as applicable)
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • Cross-training opportunities across Summit Sealants specialty divisions โ€” waterproofing, concrete repair, sealants, insulation, and more โ€” for estimators looking to expand their scope and earning potential
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Flexible remote work schedule
