The Encore Program at San Juan College creates opportunities for older adults to maintain lifelong vitality through self-development and service-and it presents an opportunity for instructors to offer a wide variety of specialized academic courses to an audience who generally take the classes for personal enrichment purposes. It's the best of all teaching worlds-teaching a subject you love to students who want to be there, usually without grading or tests. Encore offers one-credit academic classes during the Fall, Spring and Summer sessions, designed for students 50 and older but open to all students 18 and older. Classes consist of 16 hours of instruction for lecture classes and 24 hours of instruction for activity or lab classes. These classes can be taught in the classroom or during special presentations including field trips, and scheduling for these classes can be flexible, based on content, classroom availability and other offerings. Instructors are responsible for course development, classroom management and high quality instruction, and instructors will create an appropriate syllabus for each class. Students may take the classes either for a grade or for audit status. Instructors are required to attend an orientation session and are expected to assist with marketing their classes, with approval for all marketing from the Community Learning Center Director.

Encore instructors are San Juan College adjunct faculty and must have a college degree or specialized certification to teach in the Encore program. Previous teaching experience desired.

Encore Instructors need to submit specific class proposals for each session. Email Continuing Education Director, Jacinta Esquibel at esquibelj@sanjuancollege.edu for more information in order to be considered for this position. Applicants will not be considered otherwise.
