How much do remote inorganic chemistry jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for remote inorganic chemistry in the United States is $30.99, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $35.58 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by remote inorganic chemists, and how can they be addressed?

Remote inorganic chemists often encounter challenges such as limited access to laboratory facilities and hands-on experimentation, which can make it difficult to conduct certain types of research or testing. To address these issues, many remote chemists focus on computational modeling, data analysis, literature review, and collaborative projects with on-site team members. Utilizing virtual lab simulations and maintaining regular communication with colleagues through video calls and shared digital platforms can help bridge the gap and ensure productivity. Adapting to these remote workflows is essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Inorganic Chemist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Inorganic Chemist, you need a solid background in inorganic chemistry, analytical methods, and a relevant degree such as a BS, MS, or PhD in chemistry. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), spectroscopy software, and data analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and clear written communication are critical soft skills for remote collaboration and independent research. These abilities ensure accurate data interpretation, effective remote teamwork, and successful completion of research or analysis projects.

What is a remote inorganic chemist?

A remote inorganic chemist is a professional who specializes in the study of inorganic compounds and materials, such as metals, minerals, and catalysts, while working from a location outside of a traditional laboratory or office. These chemists use digital tools and remote access to perform data analysis, literature research, computational modeling, and collaborate with teams online. Their work often involves interpreting experimental data, designing new materials virtually, and supporting research projects without being physically present in a lab. Remote inorganic chemists may work in academia, industry, or for research organizations, contributing to advancements in fields like energy, materials science, and environmental technology.

Job description

We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for professionals experienced in chemistry, academic assessment design, technical question authoring, reaction mechanisms, quantitative analysis, solution verification, and structured chemistry content review.

This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on high-quality chemistry assessment development, multiple-choice question writing, academic content verification, reference solution review, and rigorous scientific reasoning evaluation. Selected professionals will apply their chemistry expertise to author, review, and validate challenging assessment materials across core chemistry domains.

Key Responsibilities

Professionals in this role may contribute to:

Chemistry Question Authoring

  • Create original, challenging multiple-choice questions across core chemistry domains
  • Design questions that test deep conceptual understanding, chemical reasoning, reaction mechanisms, quantitative analysis, and applied problem-solving
  • Ensure each question is precise, self-contained, unambiguous, and answerable based on the information provided
  • Develop plausible answer choices that challenge advanced learners and expert reviewers

Scientific Reasoning, Solution Writing & Difficulty Calibration

  • Write clear reference solutions in structured markdown format
  • Rate question difficulty across levels such as introductory undergraduate, advanced undergraduate, or postgraduate-level expertise
  • Provide academic references from reputable sources such as peer-reviewed journals, university materials, or recognized scientific resources
  • Ensure solutions are accurate, concise, chemically sound, and aligned with the intended chemistry concept

Question Verification & Academic Review

  • Review pre-written chemistry questions for accuracy, clarity, rigor, completeness, and solvability
  • Flag issues involving ambiguity, missing assumptions, weak distractors, unclear wording, or incorrect answer logic
  • Edit questions where needed and document the rationale for changes
  • Maintain high standards for scientific precision, academic quality, and assessment reliability

Ideal Profile

Strong candidates may have:

  • Advanced expertise in physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or related chemistry fields
  • Strong command of graduate-level chemistry concepts, reaction mechanisms, quantitative analysis, and experimental reasoning
  • Experience authoring, reviewing, teaching, grading, or verifying academic assessment content
  • Ability to express complex chemistry concepts clearly and concisely in written English
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify subtle scientific or conceptual issues
  • Comfort working independently on asynchronous academic review tasks

Educational Background

  • PhD or doctoral candidacy in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field is highly relevant
  • Master's degree may be suitable for candidates with exceptional depth in a specific chemistry subdomain
  • Equivalent experience in advanced research, laboratory work, teaching, academic writing, chemistry olympiad writing, assessment design, or scholarly review may also be valuable

Nice to Have

  • Experience with rigorous academic problem design, chemistry olympiad writing, research publications, laboratory instruction, or university teaching
  • Familiarity with physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy, thermodynamics, kinetics, or quantitative chemical analysis
  • Experience preparing or reviewing exam questions, benchmark tasks, academic rubrics, reference solutions, or chemistry problem sets
  • Strong comfort with markdown formatting, chemical notation, academic references, scientific terminology, and structured review workflows
  • Availability for approximately 10+ hours per week depending on project needs

Why This Opportunity

  • Apply advanced chemistry expertise to structured remote project work
  • Contribute to high-quality academic benchmark development, question authoring, solution review, and scientific reasoning evaluation
  • Work on flexible assignments aligned with your academic, research, or chemistry background
  • Use your scientific judgment in a rigorous, detail-oriented review environment
  • Remote structure with competitive hourly compensation

Contract Details

  • Independent contractor role
  • Fully remote with flexible scheduling
  • Part-time commitment of approximately 10+ hours per week depending on project availability
  • Competitive rates between $50–$95 per hour depending on expertise
  • Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
  • Projects may be extended, shortened, or adjusted depending on scope and performance
  • Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
