Their responsibilities may include automating deployment processes, managing cloud resources, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues. By working remotely, they leverage various collaboration tools to communicate with teams and manage critical infrastructure from anywhere.

How does a Remote Infrastructure Software Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in a distributed work environment?

Remote Infrastructure Software Engineers regularly work with DevOps, security, and development teams to ensure that infrastructure solutions are reliable and scalable. Collaboration often happens through daily stand-ups, code reviews, and shared documentation platforms, making strong communication skills essential. Tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom are commonly used to bridge the distance and keep projects aligned. Successfully navigating time zone differences and asynchronous communication is a key part of the role, requiring proactive updates and flexibility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Infrastructure Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Infrastructure Software Engineer, you need a strong background in software engineering, computer networking, and distributed systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Job description

Software Engineer II - Front End

Job number: 838

This is a remote position.

Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet peopleโ€™s needs and transform their experience of government.

Work on things that matter

Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. Weโ€™ve helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, weโ€™re also changing how the government approaches technology.

Built for a remote life

Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.

Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture

Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We arenโ€™t heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.

The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.

Primary Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer II (Front End), you will develop modern, accessible, and responsive web applications supporting mission-critical federal digital services. Working within a cross-functional Agile team, you'll collaborate with designers, product managers, backend engineers, and DevSecOps teams to build intuitive user experiences that improve how people interact with government services.

This role is heavily focused on modern front-end development using React, TypeScript, and component-driven architecture while following accessibility, performance, and security best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain responsive, accessible web applications using modern JavaScript, TypeScript, and React.
  • Translate user stories, wireframes, and UX designs into reusable, scalable front-end components.
  • Build applications that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards and support inclusive user experiences.
  • Integrate RESTful APIs and backend services to deliver dynamic, data-driven applications.
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including planning, development, testing, deployment, and production support.
  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure application quality and reliability.
  • Optimize applications for performance, responsiveness, accessibility, and cross-browser compatibility.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, automated testing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, identify root causes, and contribute to ongoing platform improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, Backend Engineers, QA, DevSecOps, and Security teams.
  • Mentor junior developers through code reviews, technical collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of professional software engineering experience (additional experience may substitute for education)
  • Strong experience developing modern web applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, and React
  • Experience building reusable component-based user interfaces using React Hooks and modern state management techniques
  • Strong knowledge of semantic HTML5, CSS3, responsive design, and mobile-first development
  • Experience developing applications that meet Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards
  • Experience consuming and integrating RESTful APIs
  • Experience with Git-based version control and collaborative software development workflows
  • Experience writing unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using modern front-end testing frameworks
  • Experience working within Agile software development environments
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills
  • U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a DHS Public Trust
  • Must have resided within the United States for at least three of the previous five years

Desired Skills

  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS)
  • Experience with Redux, Context API, React Query, or similar state management libraries
  • Experience with GraphQL
  • Experience with Vite, Webpack, or other modern front-end build tools
  • Experience with Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, or Playwright
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or containerized application development
  • Experience building applications in AWS cloud environments
  • Experience collaborating with UX designers using design systems such as Figma
  • Experience optimizing web application performance using Lighthouse or Core Web Vitals
  • Experience supporting federal government or other highly regulated environments
  • Familiarity with secure front-end development practices and OWASP recommendations
