Job description

VetsEZ is currently seeking a Senior Backend DevOps Engineer for a 100% remote position supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs' Joint Longitudinal Viewer (JLV) program. JLV is a mission-critical clinical application that aggregates real-time patient data from VA and DoD systems, enabling clinicians to access a unified longitudinal view of patient health information. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience operating containerized microservices in AWS ECS, designing enterprise-grade CI/CD pipelines, implementing observability and SRE practices, and supporting secure, compliant, highly available cloud environments.
The candidate must reside within the continental US.
Responsibilities:
โ€ข Operate and optimize Amazon ECS deployments for JLV backend microservices.
โ€ข Configure and manage service scaling, task definitions, health checks, and blue/green deployment strategies.
โ€ข Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code solutions aligned with VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) architecture standards.
โ€ข Support multi-region high availability and disaster recovery environments within AWS GovCloud.
โ€ข Design, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines for containerized microservices.
โ€ข Automate build, test, security scanning, deployment, verification, and rollback processes.
โ€ข Create repeatable deployment procedures and release workflows supporting VA governance requirements.
โ€ข Automate system configuration, database updates, performance tuning, and post-deployment validation.
โ€ข Build and maintain monitoring, logging, alerting, and notification systems for JLV backend services.
โ€ข Execute backup, restore, outage recovery, and incident response procedures.
โ€ข Develop operational runbooks and support production readiness activities.
โ€ข Establish performance baselines and support load testing and release validation.
โ€ข Implement security controls supporting FedRAMP High, NIST 800-53, FISMA, and VA compliance frameworks.
โ€ข Integrate security practices into CI/CD pipelines and operational workflows.
โ€ข Support continuous monitoring, audit activities, and remediation efforts.
โ€ข Implement IAM solutions following government cloud best practices.
โ€ข Partner with backend engineers, product teams, security teams, and operations personnel.
โ€ข Support production issue triage and service reliability improvements.
โ€ข Guide releases through VA governance and approval processes.
โ€ข Maintain architecture documentation, deployment guides, and operational procedures.
โ€ข Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.
Requirements:
โ€ข Experience operating containerized microservices on AWS ECS.
โ€ข Strong understanding of container orchestration, service scaling, load balancing, and health monitoring.
โ€ข Proficiency with AWS CLI and production cloud operations.
โ€ข Experience designing and supporting CI/CD pipelines for enterprise environments.
โ€ข Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code practices and automation frameworks.
โ€ข Working knowledge of FedRAMP High, NIST 800-53, FISMA, and government cloud compliance requirements.
โ€ข Experience implementing observability solutions, incident response processes, and SRE practices.
โ€ข Strong understanding of AWS networking, IAM, security groups, and multi-region disaster recovery architectures.
Additional Qualifications:
โ€ข Experience working in AWS GovCloud environments.
โ€ข Familiarity with VA Enterprise Cloud architecture and deployment patterns.
โ€ข Experience supporting healthcare applications or clinical viewer platforms.
โ€ข Familiarity with deployment governance, operational readiness reviews, and production operations management.
โ€ข Experience integrating with VA or DoD healthcare systems and services.
โ€ข Knowledge of VIP lifecycle processes and associated release documentation.
Security Clearance Requirements:
