What is a remote independent contractor?

Remote Independent Contractors are self-employed individuals who provide services to clients or companies from a location outside of a traditional office, often from their own home or another remote setting. They typically manage their own schedules, pay their own taxes, and are responsible for their own equipment and workspace. Unlike employees, independent contractors are not entitled to benefits such as health insurance, paid leave, or retirement plans from the companies they work for. This arrangement offers flexibility but also requires a high degree of self-motivation, organization, and the ability to manage multiple clients or projects.

What does a remote independent contractor do?

A remote independent contractor performs tasks for a client or business on a freelance, often short-term basis. Independent contractor jobs exist in industries such as administration and support, scientific and technical service, health care, publishing, real estate, arts and entertainment, and transportation. As an independent contractor, you sign a contract with a client or business and work to provide a specific service or product at an agreed upon rate. You may need to establish a business license as a remote independent contractor. Because you are not an employee of a business or organization, you can work a flexible schedule from home or otherwise remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote independent contractor?

To thrive as a Remote Independent Contractor, you need strong self-management, time management, and subject matter expertise, typically supported by relevant experience or specialized education. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, Trello, and cloud-based document sharing, as well as secure file transfer systems, is essential. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help you build client trust and efficiently navigate remote work challenges. These capabilities ensure you meet deadlines, maintain productivity, and deliver high-quality results in a flexible, independent work environment.

How do remote independent contractors typically manage communication and collaboration with clients and teams across different time zones?

Remote Independent Contractors often work with clients or collaborators from various regions, making clear and consistent communication crucial. They usually rely on digital tools like email, project management platforms, and video conferencing to stay connected. Setting expectations for response times, scheduling regular check-ins, and being proactive about updates help ensure smooth collaboration despite time zone differences. Flexibility and strong self-management skills are key to maintaining productivity and building trust with clients.

Job description

About Us

Jackson LLP is a boutique healthcare law firm with a client-centered ethos and friendly work environment. We represent small and mid-sized healthcare practices on regulatory and transactional business matters.
We seek a Content and Marketing Manager to run the firm’s content and marketing operation. This is a fully remote contractor position at 25 to 30 hours per week.

Position Description

This is a mid-level position. Strong editorial judgment is the core requirement. The Content and Marketing Manager runs the firm’s content pipeline from draft to publication. You will edit content for clarity, readability, and brand voice, manage the editorial calendar, keep publication on schedule, and measure what the marketing produces. You will work directly with firm leadership and coordinate the work of the firm’s marketing team, and you will be expected to bring well-reasoned, data-supported recommendations to the table.

Responsibilities

  • Edit blog posts, feature pages, and other written content for clarity, readability, and brand voice, delivering near-publication-quality drafts for attorney review.
  • Manage the editorial calendar and content pipeline in our project management system, tracking assignments and keeping production on schedule.
  • Assign and scope projects for the firm’s content team.
  • Manage recurring marketing content, including LinkedIn posts, Google Business Profile updates, and Mailchimp newsletters.
  • Optimize content for search and execute against the firm’s SEO roadmap, including keyword research and content gap analysis.
  • Coordinate publication and site updates with the firm’s website team.
  • Review and art-direct freelance design work, including ebooks, logos, and web assets, and evaluate designers when new work arises.
  • Track marketing performance and report regularly on lead flow and related pipeline metrics.
  • Identify opportunities to update, consolidate, or expand existing content, and pitch growth initiatives supported by data.

Requirements

  • Experience running a content operation or editorial workflow.
  • Working knowledge of on-page SEO, including proficiency with a major SEO platform (such as Ahrefs or Semrush) for keyword research and content gap analysis.
  • Analytics literacy, including Google Search Console and Google Analytics, and comfort owning recurring performance reporting.
  • Ability to art-direct and quality-check freelance design work is required; hands-on design skills (Canva, Adobe, Figma) are a plus.
  • Familiarity with an email marketing platform (such as Mailchimp) and WordPress.
  • Prior content work for professional services audiences (legal, medical, accounting, financial advisory, or consulting) is strongly preferred.
  • Organized, reliable, and comfortable working independently in a fully remote environment.
  • Personable, friendly, and clear in written communication.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.

Hours and Location

  • Independent contractor engagement, 25 to 30 hours per week to start, with room to grow
  • Fully remote; candidates may be located anywhere in the United States
  • Hours are flexible and not fixed to a set schedule

To Apply

Submit a resume, samples of content work with a brief note on your specific role in each (a before-and-after editing sample is especially welcome), and a brief statement describing your experience editing or managing content for professional services audiences. Applications without all three will not be reviewed. Finalists will complete a paid project on actual firm content before any offer is made.
