Is there a demand for illustrators?

Skills in digital tools such as Adobe Illustrator and a strong portfolio can improve job prospects, with many opportunities available for freelance and full-time roles online.

How much does a freelance illustrator make?

Freelance illustrators typically earn between $20 and $100 per hour, depending on experience, skill level, and project complexity. Annual income varies widely, with many earning from $25,000 to over $100,000, often influenced by their portfolio, client base, and ability to market their services. Successful freelancers often work on a project basis and may need to manage their own schedules and contracts.

How do remote illustrators typically collaborate with clients and team members despite working offsite?

Remote illustrators often use digital communication tools like email, video conferencing, and project management platforms to stay connected with clients and creative teams. They regularly share progress updates, sketches, and final artwork through cloud-based file sharing solutions. Clear communication and responsiveness are essential to ensure that feedback is incorporated efficiently and deadlines are met. Many remote illustrators also participate in virtual meetings or brainstorming sessions to align on project goals and style expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Illustrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Illustrator, you need strong artistic abilities, a solid understanding of design principles, and a relevant portfolio demonstrating your style and versatility. Proficiency with digital illustration tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) or Procreate is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are valuable soft skills for collaborating with clients and meeting deadlines remotely. These skills and qualities ensure you can deliver high-quality artwork efficiently while working independently and maintaining client satisfaction.

What Does a Remote Illustrator Do?

As a remote illustrator, you work from home to design illustrations for a company or organization. You can find illustrator positions that design video game backgrounds, TV or film storyboards, textbook and magazine illustrations, marketing materials, and children's books. Your responsibilities involve creating 2D and 3D images to meet customer expectations. You can complete your duties with images drawn by hand, digital software, or a combination. You communicate with clients to assess their needs, develop drafts for their approval, and complete projects according to an agreed upon timeline. A remote illustrator may work as a full-time employee or as a freelancer.

What are remote illustrators?

Remote illustrators are professional artists who create visual artwork, such as drawings, digital illustrations, or graphics, while working from a location outside of a traditional office setting. They use digital tools and software to collaborate with clients, publishers, or companies online. This role allows illustrators to work with clients globally, offering flexibility in both schedule and workspace. Remote illustrators can work on projects like book illustrations, marketing materials, web graphics, and more, often communicating and delivering their work entirely online.

Is AI taking over illustration jobs?

AI technology is increasingly used in illustration, automating certain tasks like background creation or simple designs, but it does not fully replace professional illustrators. Remote illustrators often combine traditional skills with digital tools and AI to enhance productivity, making human creativity still essential in complex or unique projects.

Can you work remotely as an illustrator?

Yes, remote illustration jobs are common, allowing artists to work from anywhere with a computer and internet connection. Many employers and clients hire illustrators for remote work, often requiring proficiency in digital tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator and a strong online portfolio.

Job description

Established in 2004, OLIVER is the world's first and only specialist in designing, building, and running bespoke in-house agencies and marketing ecosystems for brands. We partner with over 300 clients in 40+ countries and counting. Our unique model drives creativity and efficiency, allowing us to deliver tailored solutions that resonate deeply with audiences.

As a part of The Brandtech Group, we're at the forefront of leveraging cutting-edge AI technology to revolutionise how we create and deliver work. Our AI solutions enhance efficiency, spark creativity, and drive insightful decision-making, empowering our teams to produce innovative and impactful results.

Role: GenAI Designer

Location: Remote, Canada

About the role:

Join our team, where you'll help create and localize high-volume content for a leading vacuum and floorcare brand across the USA (and potentially additional markets). You'll produce digital-first assets that showcase product performance, features, and innovation—while ensuring brand consistency, accuracy, and compliance with category requirements (e.g., product representation, feature claims, certifications, and marketplace/channel guidelines).

This role is ideal for a hands-on designer who loves craft and speed, thrives in a high-output environment, and is excited to use Generative AI to accelerate exploration, versioning, and production—without compromising quality.

What you will be doing:

  • Design and adapt high volumes of assets within Oliver's AI platform across paid social, display, eComm, email, retail.com modules, and campaign toolkits.
  • Build clean, conversion-minded layouts that clearly communicate vacuum/floorcare benefits (suction power, filtration, runtime, attachments, floor type versatility, etc.).
  • Create variations by retailer/channel, audience, and promotional moment (seasonal events, launches, offers), maintaining consistent branding and specs.
  • Use GenAI tools to speed up concept exploration and production tasks (e.g., background generation/extension, environment variations, lifestyle scene exploration, rapid compositing, copy/layout iteration support).
  • Support responsible GenAI usage by following guidelines for brand safety, accurate product depiction, and asset provenance.
  • Contribute to prompt/playbook development and reusable workflows that help the team produce faster and more consistently.
  • Maintain high standards for product realism and detail (colour, materials/finishes, lighting, reflections, shadows, proportions).
  • Ensure claims and on-image callouts match approved product specs and legal/retailer requirements.
  • Apply and help evolve brand guidelines, templates, and style sheets across deliverables.
  • Partner directly with clients, Copywriters, and Project Managers to deliver on schedule.
  • Participate in Client reviews, incorporate feedback quickly, and manage multiple priorities in parallel.

What you need to be great in this role:

  • 3+ years of design experience in a high-volume digital or retail environment (in-house, agency, or production studio).
  • Strong skills in layout, typography, visual hierarchy, and performance-minded design for digital channels.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign); comfort working with templates and modular systems.
  • Practical experience using Generative AI tools in a design workflow (concepting, iteration, adaptation, or production support).
  • Strong attention to detail—especially around accurate product representation and clean compositing/retouching.
  • Ability to work quickly without sacrificing craft; comfortable juggling multiple projects and tight timelines.
  • Clear communicator who collaborates well across creative, project management, and client stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with workflow/collaboration tools (e.g., Adobe Workfront, Microsoft 365) a plus.
