Job description

At HVAC RNTL, we move fast—delivering commercial HVAC rental solutions when and where they're needed most. From one-ton spot coolers to large-scale chillers and cooling towers, our team responds with speed and precision, whether it's a planned project or a 24/7 emergency.

If you're wired for problem-solving and thrive in a fast-paced environment, you'll fit right in. Our people set us apart—and with locations across the U.S., there's room to grow, take on big challenges, and make an immediate impact.

Job Title: Technical Specialist

Reports To: National Applied Lead

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

As a Technical Specialist, you will be the primary Subject Matter Expert on large tonnage air-cooled and water-cooled chillers, as well as all Applied Assets. You will address complex field issues, develop training programs, and assist in equipment investment decisions. This autonomous role reports directly to leadership and supports a national team of specialists across North America. You will enhance the effectiveness of technicians by providing expert troubleshooting support, hands-on training, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues on large tonnage Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers and other Applied Assets; provide hands-on and remote diagnostic support nationally.
  • Act as the company's Subject Matter Expert across all Applied Assets, providing technical guidance to technicians, Service Managers, and leadership.
  • Develop and administer formal training programs for technicians; mentor and upskill less experienced technicians in the field and the Depot.
  • Be available 24/7 to support urgent technical issues and escalations.
  • Serve as a technical resource within the Remote Monitoring team, supporting proactive issue identification and resolution.
  • Contribute to the selection of capital equipment purchases with field-level technical insight.
  • Provide technical solutions and recommendations for recurring or difficult job site problems.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of hands-on experience troubleshooting large tonnage Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled Chillers.
  • Demonstrated Subject Matter Expert-level knowledge of Applied Assets.
  • Proven ability to train, mentor, and develop technical talent.
  • Willingness and ability to travel a minimum of 50%.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, nationally-scoped role.
  • Availability for 24/7 technical support coverage.
  • Valid driver's license (company truck provided).

Employment practices will not be influenced or affected by an applicant's or employee's race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age, disability, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, veteran status or any other legally protected status. Reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities unless doing so would result in an undue hardship.

Salary ranges listed are dependent upon a candidate's qualifications, experience, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the specific role and location.
