Job description

Providence Swedish is seeking a Physician Advisor to provide physician leadership within Utilization Management, partnering closely with Care Management, Medical Staff, and executive leadership to drive high value care.
This fully remote position supports Washington ministries and focuses on advancing medical necessity practices, reducing preventable denials, optimizing length of stay, and improving patient flow through data-driven and clinician-engaged strategies. The provider must reside in one of Providence's footprint states (Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, or Washington).
Position Highlights:
  • Influence division-wide utilization management strategy and clinical practice patterns across physicians and advanced-practice clinicians (APCs)
  • Partner across medical staff, care management, and revenue cycle to drive aligned outcomes
  • Lead initiatives to improve length of stay, documentation integrity, and denial prevention at scale
  • Play a key role in advancing a high-value, patient-centered model
  • Compensation is between $331,411 and $373,442 per year

Key Responsibilities:
Clinical & Operational Responsibilities
  • Review cases for admission appropriateness, level of care, and medical necessity
  • Lead denial prevention and management, including peer-to-peer discussions and appeals
  • Support complex discharge planning and patient status determinations

Clinician Leadership & Program Impact
  • Partner with care management and physician/APC teams to proactively reduce avoidable days and discharge barriers
  • Use data and analytics to identify variation in LOS, denial trends, and documentation gaps, and drive targeted interventions
  • Lead education and engagement initiatives across physicians and APCs to improve documentation, status decisions, and compliance with Medicare and payer requirements
  • Collaborate with executive and operational leaders to align utilization management strategies with system goals for patient flow, access, and financial performance
  • Serve as a liaison across medical staff, care management, and revenue cycle to drive consistent, compliant utilization practices

Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO from an accredited program
  • Board certified in an ABMS clinical specialty
  • Currently has, or has the ability to obtain, a Washington State physician license
  • Prior experience as a Physician Advisor or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience
  • Working knowledge of utilization management and medical necessity
  • Must reside in Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, or Washington; position is remote

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Healthcare Management, Business, or Public Health
  • ABQAURP or HCQM certification
  • Leadership experience in medical staff or hospital committees
  • Strong understanding of utilization review and clinical documentation integrity
